Fostering worldwide interoperability ICT & Environment Activities in Korea Byoung Moon Chin Vice President, TTA Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) 14 DOCUMENT #:GSC14-PLEN-047 FOR:Presentation SOURCE:TTA AGENDA ITEM:6.8 CONTACT(S):bmchin@tta.or.kr

Fostering worldwide interoperability Climate Changes in Korea 2 Slowly changing temperature climate to subtropical climate Southern sea temperature of Korea has been risen by 2 ° C over the last 30 years In 2100, temperature is expected to rise by 4 ° C and rainfall by 20%. Korea was ranked 10 th among the largest CO 2 emissions countries Korea will implement the “Kyoto Protocol” compulsorily during the second commitment period (2013~2017)

Fostering worldwide interoperability Highlight of Current Activities(1/8) 3 “Green Growth Commission” in Korea Government has announced “National Strategy for Green ICT” in May 2009 Objectives of the Strategy: Selection of Green ICT technology as New Growth Engine; * Global Green ICT Market : $0.5bn(’08)  $4.8bn(‘13) Accelerating transition into Low Carbon Society converged with ICT services; Strengthening counter capacity for Climate Change based on ICT technology.

Fostering worldwide interoperability 4 Green ICT Strategic Technology Areas: 1) Green ICT Basic technologies - Implementation of infrastructure for Green ICT industry and environment 2) Green of ICT - Development of low carbon technology to improve energy efficiency for the ICT products 3) Green by ICT - Energy saving and GHG reduction in IT- converged area by utilization of ICT technology Highlight of Current Activities(2/8)

Fostering worldwide interoperability 5 1) Green ICT Basic technologies: Climate change monitoring and data quantification; Energy monitoring and data interface; GHG emission monitoring; Measurement index on energy consumption of broadcasting and communication devices; Observation system & methodology to secure reliable observation results. Highlight of Current Activities(3/8)

Fostering worldwide interoperability 6 2) Green of ICT:  CO 2 emission from ICT is 2% of total global emission volume Development of green ICT products; - Low power high performance PC, monitor, server  20% reduction of energy consumption by 2020 Implementation of ICT environment with high performance, low power and low cost - Virtualizing, Cloud computing, SaaS, etc. - Low carbon network & devices, Green-IDC, etc.  40% enhancement of electric power efficiency by 2013 Highlight of Current Activities(4/8)

Fostering worldwide interoperability 7 3) Green by ICT (1/2):  Estimated that 7~25% of the global CO 2 emission volume can be reduced by ICT Energy monitoring at home and building;  13% reduction of energy consumption by 2013 Implementation of remote & electronic work environment;  3.15M tons reduction of CO 2 emission by 2013 ICT based green production management  8% enhancement of energy efficiency and 6.85M tons reduction of Carbon emission by 2013 Highlight of Current Activities(5/8)

Fostering worldwide interoperability 8 Highlight of Current Activities(6/8) 3) Green by ICT (2/2): Implementation of smart ITS & logistics system;  280M tons reduction of CO2 by 2013 Implementation of remote & electronic work environment;  3.15M tons reduction of CO 2 emission by 2013 Implementation of intelligent system for environment monitoring and disaster management  3,500 tons reduction per year by 2013

Fostering worldwide interoperability 9 Highlight of Current Activities(7/8) 2011 201320182009 Terms, Measurement Index Environment Monitoring LED VLC(Visible Light Communication) Remote Work (Smart Work Center) Green Computing Energy Efficient Network Basic Technologies Green ICT Guideline Green of ICT Green by ICT Green ICT Standardization Roadmap Green Home Smart Grid Integrated Transportation Platform

Fostering worldwide interoperability 10 TTA has launched “Green ICT standard activities” in order to implement the strategy 1) TTA ICT & CC Standard Advisory Group Developing TTA standards (Checklist for energy saving, Terminology and Correlation conception of ICT and environment) 2) ICT/Environment Standardization Forum Developing de facto standards Analyzing and studying Green ICT technology * Korea ITU committee has set “ICT & Climate Change Sub-Committee” in December 2008 Highlight of Current Activities(8/8)

Fostering worldwide interoperability Challenge 11 Green ICT industry is regarded as Growth Engine for Korean Economy National / Public Communication Network - Disaster Management - Climate Monitoring - Ecology/Ocean/Soil Monitoring - SoC Management - Plant Management - Building Management - Air Pollution Monitoring - Waste Water/Gas Monitoring - Recycling Management - Transportation Management - Streetlight Remote Control - Logistics Management

Fostering worldwide interoperability Next Step 12 TTA will continue to develop methodology to describe and estimate the present and future CO 2 emissions of ICTs Study on terms, definitions and impacts on ICTs and CC Developing checklists for eco-friendly ICTs ITU Climate Change Symposium Seoul, Korea / 23 September 2009 Hosted by KCC, organized by ITU and KCC Presentation using video-conference tool Participation via internet ; Environment-friendly conference
