INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION Copyright © IEC, Geneva, Switzerland Shuji Hirakawa Secretary of IEC Technical Committee 100 19 May 2010 Status report of USB battery charging and other USB specifications

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 2 Energy Efficiency / Battery Charger  TV Receiver measurement method is updated as IEC 62087Ed.2  It provides 10 minutes video for measuring TV receiver power consumption using simulated APL curve.  Currently, STB power consumption method is updating as IEC 62087Ed.3. It is closely related to ITU-T SG 9 and SG 16.  TC 100/TA 1 is developing a mobile phone battery charging standard based on the proposal from Nokia/Finland NC.  This proposal is using 2 mm barrel type connector.  ITU-T Study Group 5 received the proposal from GSMA that uses Micro-USB interface.  Recently, TC 100 approved the NP for USB-IF (implementers forum) battery charging specification.

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 3 Recommendation ITU-T L.1000  Universal power adapter and charger solution for mobile terminals and other ICT devices  Summary This recommendation provides high level requirements for a universal power adapter and charger solution that will reduce the number of power adapters and chargers produced and recycled by widening their application to more devices and increasing their lifetime. The solution also aims to reduce energy consumption. The longer life cycle and possibility of avoiding device duplication reduces the demand on raw materials and waste. The universal power adapter and charger solution is designed to serve the great majority of mobile terminals and other ICT devices.

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 4 Liaison from ITU-T SG 5 to IEC/TC 100  ITU-T Study Group 5 (Buenos Aires, 12-16 April 2010)  Reply on universal charger solution (Recommendation ITU-T L.1000)  We are aware that several standardisation organisations are working on this issue.  From your Liaison, we learned that IEC TC 100 is working on two battery charger interfaces: 2mm barrel and micro USB.  Please note that we do not specify battery charger interfaces.

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 5 EuP M455EN: Brussels, 1st October 2009 Title: Standardisation mandate to CEN, CENELEC and ETSI on a common Charging Capability for Mobile Telephones Background: Incompatibility of chargers for mobile phones is an inconvenience for users and leads to unnecessary waste of resources. Currently, specific external power supplies (EPSs) are sold together with specific mobile phones. Following a request from the European Commission and in close co-operation with the Commission services, major producers of mobile phones have agreed in a Memorandum of Understanding “MoU regarding Harmonisation of a Charging Capability for Mobile Phones”1 (in the following “the MoU”) to harmonise EPSs for data-enabled mobile phones sold in the EU.

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 6 CENELEC Activities  TECHNICAL ANNEX TO “MoU regarding Harmonisation of a Charging Capability for Mobile Phones”  This annex is divided in three parts:  Part A covering the specification of the Common EPS  Part B covering the input to EMC standardisation  Part C covering the input to safety standardisation

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 7 Battery Charging Interface Standards  CENELEC:EPS  EuP M455 Annex  ITU-T SG 5:User requirement  Recommendation ITU-T L.1000  IEC/TC 100:Battery Charging Interface Specifications using:  2 mm barrel type connectorIEC 62637-1, -2  USB-IF Micro-B type connectorIEC 62680

2010/05/19Agenda 5.1(7) 8 USB Data Transmission Specifications  USB-IF wishes to add data transmission protocol in the same document.  In order to exclude the case using USB-IF battery charging interface with other data transmission specifications.  In addition, the document shall include the specifications of USB-IF specific connectors.
