2. Year 1860  November 6, 1860- Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States of America  Lincoln didn’t want to extend slavery in the new American states which made tensions high between northern and southern states President Lincoln

Year 1861 ► January-Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, South Carolina all seceded ► After Lincoln was elected, the state North Carolina became a threat to the other states. A convention was called where the delegates voted to kick South Carolina out of the union. After the Carolina succession, it led to a mass succession by other Southern states

4. Year 1861  April 12-The civil war begins at Fort Sumter  President Abraham Lincoln planned on sending supplies over to Fort Sumter. He found out that there was going to be an attack at the Fort so Lincoln warned the state in advance. Fort Sumter

5. Year 1861 ► April 12-South Carolina thought they were going to be tricked and commander Robert Anderson was asked to surrender. Robert agreed only after he seen his supplies. His offer was rejected and the attack began which marked the beginning of the Civil War. ► April 17- Virginia secedes from the union on ► Throughout the month of April, four more states joined confederacy ► May 6-Arkansas secedes from the union ► May 20- North Carolina secedes from the union

6. Year 1861  June 20-The western part of Virginia didn’t want to secede with the rest of the state. On this day, West Virginia became apart of the union.  Four slave states, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri, didn’t succeed from the union. Even though they had an acceptance to slavery, the military pressure and the political movement kept these states from seceding  July 21-The first battle of the Bull Run occurred

Year 1862 January 19- the Battle of Mill Springs occurred in Kentucky February 6- the Battle of Fort Henry occurred in Tennessee on this day and the Battle of Roanoke Island occurred in North Carolina two days later February 12 to 16- a three day battle at Tennessee occurred known as the Battle of Donelson. This lead to Fort Donelson surrendering to the Union March 6-8- in Arkansas, the Battle of Pea Ridge occurs. This battle lasted for two days.

9. April 6 to 7- The Confederate troops did a surprise attack on the Union army at Shiloh, Tennessee. About 13, 000 Union troops were killed or wounded while only 10,000 Confederate troops were killed or wounded. August 29 to 30- The Second Battle of Bull Run occurred. This battle happened in North Virginia where 75,000 union troops were defeated by 55,000 Confederate troops. The union army was forced to retreat back to Washington. September 17- There were over 26,000 casualties after the Union troops began attacking the Confederate troops at Antietam, Maryland.

11. Year 1863 January 1- The final Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln. This freed all slaves that worked in the Confederate states. It also talked about the need to enlist freed slaves into the Union army. March 3- The United States Congress states that there is a mandatory enlistment into the army for any male between the ages of 20 and 45. If any male pays a $300.00 fee, they don’t have to enlist into the army.

12. May 1 to 4- The Union army suffers a defeat at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. Over 17,000 out of 130,000 Union army troops were killed, wounded or missing. July 1 to 3- The Union army finally gets a win at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. This was the period of time when the war began to change in favor of the Union.

15. Year 1864  March 9- General Grant is now the commander of all the United States armies.  June 3- There were over 7,000 Union army casualties after the battle of Cold Harbour. This was a mistake made by General Grant after the number of casualties grew to over 7,000, in only 20 minutes.  November 8- Abraham Lincoln is re-elected president of the United States. He defeated George B. McClellan.

Year 1865 JJJJanuary 31- The Thirteenth Amendment is added to the constitution which was approved by the U.S. Congress. FFFFebruary 3- President Lincoln meets with Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens in a peace conference. The meeting, that was held in Hampton, Virginia, was a failure and the war would continue. AAAApril 9- General Robert E. Lee finally surrenders to the Union led by General Ulysses S. Grant. This happens at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

18. April 14- The American flag is raised over Fort Sumter. John Wilkes Booth assonants President Lincoln at a play that the President was watching with his wife, Mary. A April 15- After the shooting, President Abraham Lincoln dies at 7:22 am. Vice President Andrew Johnson becomes the president of the United States. April 26- John Wilkes Booth is murdered in Virginia. (shot and killed)
