Francisci WG.2a

 The low latitude climates are always between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.  The climate is tropical, wet, hot and humid.

 Tropical Rainforest (Tropical Wet)  Found on or near equator  Warm year round  Many animals and insects  Precipitation daily  Tropical Savanna (Tropical Wet & Dry)  Found on outskirts of Tropical Rain Forest  Warm year round  Mostly grasslands  Precipitation varies

 The middle latitude climates are always found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle latitude lines or between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle Lines.  The climate is semi- arid to arid, cool to cold in winter and warm to hot in summer.

 Humid Continental  Found in interior regions of continents  Precipitation varies  Vegetation consists of mixed forests  Warm summers and cold winters (All 4 Seasons)  Humid Subtropical  Found in southeastern regions of continents (Florida)  Vegetation consists of mixed forests  Precipitation varies with humidity.  Mild short winters, hot, long summers (Mostly 2 seasons)

 Marine West Coast  Western coasts of continents (Oregon, Washington, western Europe)  Mixed Forests  Abundant Precipitation all year  Ocean winds bring cool summers and mild winters  Mediterranean Climate (Dry Summer Tropical)  Found around Mediterranean Sea  Chaparral: olive, date trees  Mild, rainy winters, and hot, sunny, dry summers  Found in southern California and in southern Australia

 High latitude climates are located between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole latitude lines and the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole.  The climate in these regions is sub arctic, cold, tundra or ice cap.

 Subarctic  Found south of Arctic Circle  Frozen permafrost soil  Bitterly cold winters, short cool summers  Coniferous Forest (Taiga)  Tundra  Found at or above Arctic Circle  No trees; small bushes, grass, moss, lichens  Bitterly cold winters, short cool summers  Half of the year spend in constant darkness; half the year in constant light.

 Ice Cap  Found in Antarctica and interior of Greenland  No vegetation  Bitterly cold all the time  Snow and ice can be 2 miles thick!

 Desert (Arid Climate)  Precipitation less than 10 inches  Vegetation is scarce and may include cacti  Temperature may be hot or cold  Does not have to have sand  Steppe (Semi-Arid)  Found on the borders of a desert  Precipitation 10 to 20 inches  Vegetation includes grasslands  Temperature may be hot or cold

 Highland (Mountain)  Temperatures and vegetation depend on elevation  Timberline is the height in elevation above which trees cannot grow
