2 Unit Question: How does reading help me learn and understand new words? Essential Question: Why is reading important? important?

3 TEKS  5) Reading/word identification. The student uses a variety of word identification strategies. The student is expected to:  (A) decode by using all letter-sound correspondences within a word (1-3)  (B) blend initial letter-sounds with common vowel spelling patterns to read words (1-3)  (C) identify multisyllabic words by using common syllable patterns (1-3)  (E) use knowledge of word order (syntax) and context to support word identification and confirm word meaning (1-3); and  (F) read both regular and irregular words automatically such as through multiple opportunities to read and reread (1-3).

4 “Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.” SKILLS WE WILL MASTER:  Use context clues to discover the meanings to new words.  The proper use of a dictionary and other references to learn the definitions of new words.  To solidify the uses of irregular words  How to recognize words that have the same vowel sounds.

5 Individual Learning Strategies  Assigned reading and making lists of words not familiar with  Silent reading in class (10-15 min)  Write a paragraph on what the word “delicious” means to you using words learned in this unit

6 Group/Class Learning Activities  Students take turns reading aloud in reading groups of 2-3 or class  Play MadLibs as a class using selected words from The Search for Delicious  A project/presentation of the groups favorite word from our unit using varying references
