ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE II FINAL EXAM REVIEW UNIT 3: AIR POLLUTION Final Exam will be on Wednesday June 10, 2015 The final exam is worth 20% of your final grade for the course Please bring a pen or pencil to the exam with you. 3 Natural Air Pollutants: sand, dust, forest fires Particulates- tiny solids suspended in the atmosphere Ash, dust, pesticides, fertilizers

Pollutants are worse in the winter- poor circulation

Carbon Monoxide Deadly- Odorless and colorless gas From generators, faulty heating systems, fireplaces, cars Prevents oxygen from binding to the hemoglobin in your Red Blood Cells- deprives your body of oxygen

Acid Rain Gas: sulfur dioxide The gases react with water in the atmosphere forming carbonic acid or sulfuric acid Source of Gas: burning fossil fuels Effect on the environment: Decreases the pH of lakes- aquatic organism may not be able to adapt to the change Damages buildings

Ozone Depletion Gas: chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) Source of Gas: aerosol cans, refrigerator and AC coolants Effect on the environment: breaks down the ozone layer Why is the ozone layer important? It protects us from UV rays- can cause skin cancer

Global Warming The Greenhouse Effect: greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere leading to an increase in the temperature of the earth

How can we slow down global warming? Use renewable energy sources Decrease our use of fossil fuels Put an end to deforestation Decrease our use of energy Gas: carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor Greenhouse gases Source of Gas: carbon dioxide- burning fossil fuels Methane- landfills, biomass, cows

Effects of Global Warming on the Environment: Coastal flooding and damage: melting polar ice caps will increase the level of the sea which will cause coastal cities to flood Energy Use: due to the warmer temperature, more energy will be used for air conditioners to keep cool Extreme Weather: warmer water temperatures will lead to an increase in the number of hurricanes Sea Level Rise: warmer temperatures will cause the ice caps to melt, which will cause in an increase in sea level Increased Diseases: warmer temperatures are ideal conditions for many disease causing insects to survive. Insect Infestation: Warmer temperatures will allow many insects to survive year round Thinning Polar Ice: due to the warmer temperature, the polar ice caps will melt Decrease biodiversity- increased extinction due heat- animals may not be able to adapt
