2 WELCOME TO THEATRE

3 What do I do?  First, get necessary materials out of your backpack, and get in your seat before the bell rings. Answer the attendance question for the day on your handout.  Then, take out a sheet of paper and write the heading in the upper right hand corner.  NAME  DATE  BLOCK

4 NEXT…..  Complete the assignment on the board and place it in your BINDER!

5 What grades are given each six weeks?

6  Daily grades— around 30 pts.  Homework – 30-50 pts.

7  Tests—100 pts.

8  TESTS- -100 PTS.  essays- -100 pts.

9  Mid-Term  Projects--100-500 pts.  Final Exam

10 BOOKS  We will be reading/using Glencoe Literature: The Reader’s Choice (in class only)  I will issue grammar workbooks— homework from this frequently!!!!!

11 BOOKS:  We will be reading/using the textbook, Theatre: Art in Action in class.

12 “PLAY” DAY  We will also be reading from/acting out the following plays: Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Doll’s House, and Death of A Salesman every Wednesday—OUTSIDE (weather permitting).

13 Other books…..  We will be reading the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller (see supply list).  You will also read The Scarlet Letter. (You may choose to read and take an AR test on The Red Badge of Courage or The Tragedy of Julius Caesar for extra credit)  Our library check-out dates are every other Wednesday. You are required to read TWO books (of your choice) each nine weeks.  Information about BOOK PROJECTS will be available soon!!

14 HOMEWORK POLICY  You will have random homework assignments, along with your daily workbook assignments  Late homework will not be accepted!  Late homework will not be accepted!

15  Homework will be graded for accuracy most of the time!  Homework will be checked by me, or one of your peers.  --If you grade a paper, you must put “graded by: your name” at the bottom of their paper.

16 CHEATING POLICY  If you grade someone’s paper “incorrectly”, (or cheat in any other manner) you could receive a ZERO—and a trip to the office!  Tip: If you cheat in college, it is called “Academic Misconduct”—they won’t give you a zero, they will just kick you out!

17 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAYS:  Every other Friday, you will write an essay in class. I will give you a topic, then you will have 10 minutes to pre-write. You may use the rest of the class time to draft and revise your essay.  If you finish early, you may read one of your library books!

18 Notetaking  Everything you write must have the heading in the upper, right hand-corner of your paper: Name, Date, and Block!

19 COMBO NOTES...  You will take notes by drawing a line down the center of the page and taking verbatim notes on the right-hand side; on the left-hand side you should either paraphrase or draw a visual representation. “…Juliet is the sun.” “…kill the envious moon”

20 EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES:  RANDOM, PARTICIPATION CREDIT  PROJECTS  AUTHOR’S CHAIR (English Only)  MONOLOGUE MONDAYS (TH only)  SELLERS’ CASH

21 What is Author’s Chair?  Author’s Chair is a 100 pt. extra credit opportunity offered on every other Monday!  All you have to do is read one of your five paragraph essays to the class!  You can only receive this extra credit once during the semester!

22 CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:  Take care of all locker and bathroom visits before class.  Dispose of all gum, candy, drinks, etc. before entering.

23 Procedures continued...  Have materials ready and be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.  There will be random quizzes, notebook checks, etc.

24 TARDIES  IF YOU ARE NOT IN YOUR SEAT WITH YOUR MATERIALS ON YOUR DESK WHEN THE BELL RINGS, YOU WILL BE THE LAST TO LEAVE THE ROOM AT THE END OF THE BLOCK.

25 LAST FIVE MINUTES…  AT THE END OF CLASS, BEFORE YOU ARE DISMISSED, THE CLASS MUST CHECK OFF THE COURSE OF STUDY OBJECTIVES ON THE BOARD.

26  Your row must be clean before you leave each day-- the messiest row will stay and clean the rest of the room.

27  You will be accountable getting your make- up work (within two days of an excused absence). *See syllabus

28 CLASS MATERIALS…...  See your supply list!

29 DISCIPLINE  RULES  Obey school rules/ Do not display *inappropriate behavior  Bring materials  Do not cheat  Be in your seat when the bell rings  Do not get on the stage without permission  CONSEQUENCES  Sentences  Student conference  Parent contacted  Parent conference  Office referral (not necessarily in that order)!

30 INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR: Anything that is offensive, vulgar, or disrespectful directed toward me or another student (offensive language, destruction of property, excessive talking or distractions, etc.)

31 Test/Quiz taking policy:  You must not:  Talk (during or after the test/quiz)  Turn around or  look around

32 When you are finished taking a test….  Turn in my copy.  Put your test in the appropriate tray.  Go back to your seat and begin on the next assignment (without talking, turning around or looking around).

33 COMPOSITION RULES..  You will receive a list of composition rules to follow when you are working on a portfolio piece, research paper, or other “finished” piece of writing.  Points will be deducted for each rule you break!

34 Composition Rules may also be used as punishment (sentences)  If you break a rule (as an individual or as a class), you may have to copy them 10 times—YES, THAT WOULD BE 220 SENTENCES!

35 THE RESEARCH PAPER  You will receive handouts on the research paper soon.  You must follow the B.H.S English Department’s policies regarding the research paper or you will receive a “0” on this 500 pt. project!
