Peace keeping organization. Began on October.24 th, 1945 Involves 192 member states International Main Goal: To maintain peace and security worldwide after WWII

In charge of making decisions on important questions. Make decisions about how to keep and maintain peace, approving budgets, appoint and elect leaders for other branches of the UN Each assembly member receives one vote on decisions. Made up of many different committees, such as: Investments, Committee against torture and Committee on the rights of a child

Maintain Peace and Security and bring disputes to an end as soon as possible. Composed of 5 permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States (10 non perm.) Main Goals: To find non-physical ways to end disputes. Ex: Economic sanctions. Investigation of problems that could cause International friction. Elect judges for the International Court of Justice.

Located at Peace Palace in The Hague. Settle international disputes Composed of 15 judges Began functioning in April of 1946

Economic & Social Council: Coordinate Economic and social dealings. Promote: high standard of living, full employment. Solve health and safety problems, encourage respect for human rights and deal with Cultural and Educational issues. Trusteeship Council: has authority on political, economic, social and educational decisions. Secretariat: In charge of book work and promotion of the UN

The United Nations is very effective. Though there will always still be war and fighting, I do feel as though they have maintained peace and been successful in many third world countries especially right after WWII.
