2 The Golden Age of Athens Chapter 9 Lesson 3

3 The Golden Age of Athens:  Followed the Greek victory over Persian Empire and lasted 75 years (479-404 BCE)  Ideas in philosophy, education, art, and government flourished

4 The Philosophers:  Socrates  Plato  Aristotle  All three had different methods, but each taught people how to reason = logical thinking

5 Socrates :  Wanted his students to question things "Is our government good? If gods exist, where do they live?“  Taught by asking questions = Socratic Method  Was accused of corrupting the youth, was found guilty, he took his own life

6 Plato:  focused on important questions such as "What is the self?" and "What is human nature?"  believed that a philosopher's job is to open people's eyes to the truth and help them strive to be good and fair  first to teach that women should receive the same education as men

7 Aristotle:  had new ideas on how the world should be studied  He liked to make detailed observations of the world, taking notes and records of what he saw.  The "mean" - He believed that the best way for people to behave was to avoid any extremes. Today we call this "doing everything in moderation

8 Athens Falls to Sparta:  Greek city-states formed an alliance with Athens or Sparta  War broke out in 431 BCE = Peloponnesian War  Athens surrendered in 404 BCE
