- The American Revolution was a political battle that took place between 1765- 1783. The actual war itself didn’t begin until 1775 -Disputes arose after the Seven Years War (French and Indian War) over taxation. -On October 7, 1763 Britain passed the Proclamation of 1763 prohibiting all settlement west of the Appalachian mountains. Britain feared angering the Native Americans and didn’t want another costly war. This action offended the 13 colonies’ claim to the right to govern lands to their west.

-Worried about paying for the costs of the war, Britain decided to start enacting taxes on the colonies. These taxes angered the colonists, because they were not represented in Parliament. -On April 5, 1764 Britain enacted the Sugar Act. This was the first taxed placed on the colonies Britain hoped it would not only help with the war costs, but also hoped it would deter smuggling -On March 22, 1765 Britain enacted the Stamp Act * This tax was to help offset the costs of garrisoning the colonies.

-On May 15, 1765 the Quartering Act was passed by Britain. This Act required that colonial assemblies pay for supplies to British garrisons -On May 30, 1765 the Virginia Assembly passed the Virginia Resolution. The resolution stated that the Virginia Assembly refused to comply with the Stamp Act -In October 1765, 9 of the 13 colonies declared the Stamp Act to be unconstitutional -The Declaratory Act was passed by Britain on March 18, 1766. * The act finalized the repeal of the Stamp Act, but declared that Britain had the right to tax the colonies.

-In October 1768, British troops arrive in Boston in response to political unrest. Bostonians were angered at having British troops stationed in their city -On March 5, 1770 an angry crowd began harassing British troops, which led to them firing into the crowd. 5 colonists were killed during this action leading it to be called the “Boston Massacre” The first shot fired was believed to be accidental -On May 10, 1773 Britain passed the Tea Act. Parliament exempted the East India Tea Company from any import duties, allowing them to sell directly to the colonies. The colonists saw this as an outrage, that they should be taxed, while Britain’s tea was exempted from their import duties.

-On December 16, 1773, colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians dumped 9,00 pounds of British tea into the Boston Harbor. This would later be known as the Boston Tea Party -Between May and June of 1774, the British would enact the “Intolerable Acts”. These were 4 acts that stripped Massachusetts of self government and judicial independence in response to the Boston Tea Party -In September 1774, colonial delegates met and formed the Continental Congress to organize opposition to the Intolerable Acts. - On April 19, 1775 the battles of Lexington and Concord took place. * These were the first true engagements of the Revolutionary War
