Grade Level: 5 Summary: The purpose of this power point is to have student understand what took place during the 1830 Indian Removal Act, when the Cherokee Indians were removed from their homes on the east side of Mississippi River. Learning Objectives: Given websites that contains facts about the Cherokee Indians, the 1830 Indian Removal Act and President Andrew Jackson and his participation, students will analyze material within the website to answer questions within power point at 100% accuracy. Content Standard 5.31Analyze the appeal of the Great Plains to settlers and immigrants, including geographical factors, railroads, homesteading rights, and the absence of American Indians. ISTE Standards: Use digital- imaging technology to modify or create works of art for use in a digital presentation. (1, 2, 6)

3 Facts: Go to this website to learn about Andrew Jackson’s controversial decisions during the time of the Trail of Tears. Indian removal took place in the Northern states as well. In Illinois and Wisconsin, for example, the bloody Black Hawk War in 1832 opened to white settlement millions of acres of land that had belonged to the Sauk, Fox and other native nations. Andrew Jackson had been an advocate of what he called “Indian removal.” In 1830, he signed the Indian Removal Act, which gave the federal government the power to exchange Native held land in the cotton kingdom east of the Mississippi.

It is said that more than 4,000 Cherokee men, women, and children died of hunger, disease, or exposure. Andrew Jackson was the President of the United States during the time that the 'Trail of Tears' was made, but it was Martin Van Buren who was president when it really took place. Jackson is accused for it to this day.
