3 Vocabulary Skill: the prefixes dis- and de- The prefix “ de- ” means “ reduce, ” “ remove, ” or “ not ”. (such as deprived) The prefix “ dis- ” also means “ not, ” as well as “ apart ”. (such as disorder) These are two very common prefixes that come before nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to form many words in English

4 Vocabulary: P.120 (A) 1 deduct: when you deduct an amount from a total, you subtract it from the total (deduct=subtract) 2 detach: if you detach one thing from another that it is fixed to, you remove it; if one thing detaches from another, it becomes separated from it (detach=take off) 3 discharge: when someone is discharged from hospital, prison, or one of the armed services, they are officially allowed to leave (discharge=release)

5 Vocabulary: P.120 (A) 4 depart: when something or someone departs from a place, they leave it and start a journey to another place (depart=leave) 5 disgrace: if you say that someone is in disgrace, you are emphasizing that other people disapprove of them and do not respect them because of something that they have done (disgrace=embarrassment)

6 Vocabulary: P.120 (b) 1 descent: a decent is a movement from a higher to a lower level or position 2 disapproving: a disapproving action or expression shows that you do not approve of something or someone 3 deodorize: if you deodorize something, you hide or remove unpleasant smells from it

7 Vocabulary: P.120 (b) 4 disembark: when passengers disembark from a ship, airplane, or bus, they leave it at the end of their journey 5 disperse: when a group of people disperses, or when someone disperses them, the group splits up and the people leave in different directions

9 Vocabulary Comprehension: Definition (P.153) 1 competent: capable, knowledgeable or experienced 2 disgruntled: unhappy or displeased with something, often used to describe a person 3 escalate: increase, usually in a negative or dangerous way 4 interaction: two things affecting each other

10 Vocabulary Comprehension: Definition (P.153) 5 miss out on: to lose or not have a chance to do something that is fun or interesting 6 motivated: driven by a strong desire to do something 7 radical: extreme 8 restore: to bring something back to the way it was 9 secure: safe and protected

11 Vocabulary Skill: the root word ven/vent (P. 154) The root word “ ven ” / “ vent ”, means “ to come ” 1 convene (v): to gather or call together for a meeting 2 circumvent (v): to avoid or find a way around something

12 Vocabulary (P. 154) 3 intervene (v): to stop an action happening between other people 4 inventory (n): the stock or supply of items available for sale 5 revenue (n): incoming money 6 prevention (n): something that keeps something else form happening (ex:prevention is better than cure)
