3 Paragraph 1 1 baffle (v): not to understand something at all, to confuse completely 2 archeology, archeologist (n): archaeology is the study of the societies and peoples of the past, by examining the remains of their buildings, tools, and other artifacts (artefacts). 3 spectacular (adj): something that is spectacular is very impressive or dramatic 4 extraordinary (adj): if you describe something or someone as extraordinary, you mean that they have some extremely good or special quality

4 Paragraph 1 and 2 5 speculate (v): to guess about 6 as to (prep.): about 7 in person: personally 8 isolated (adj): separated from others, alone 9 statue (n): a statue is a large sculpture of a person or an animal, made of stone, marble, bronze, or some other hard material. 10 intriguing (adj): interesting, causing curiosity, fascinating. (intrigue) 11 resemble (v): to look like someone or something else

5 Paragraph 3 1 Polynesian 2 inhabitant (n): the inhabitants of a place are the people who live there. (such as: the inhabitants of Kaohsiung) 3 carve (v): if you carve an object, you make it by cutting it out of a substance such as wood or stone 4 volcano, volcanic

(use pl.) 2 formation (n): if people or things are in formation, they are arranged in a particular pattern as they move; a rock or cloud formation is rock or cloud of a particular shape or structure 3 sacred (adj): holy 4 observatory (n): a building with a large telescope from which scientists study things such as the planets by watching them

7 Paragraph 4 and 5 5 enormous (adj): something that is enormous is extremely large in size or amount 6 monument (n): a monument is a large structure, usually made of stone, which is built to remind people of an event in history or of a famous person 7 estimate (v): if you estimate a quantity or value, you make an approximate judgment (judgement) or calculation 8 feat (n): if you refer to an action, or the result of an action, as a feat, you admire it because it is an impressive and difficult achievement

8 Paragraph 6, 7 and 8 1 phenomenon (n): a fact, event, or image that strikes one ’ s attention and attracts interest (it ’ s phenomenal!) 2 plateau (n): a plateau is a large area of high and fairly flat land 3 in/significant (adj): not important, without meaning 4 geometric (adj): having simple, regular lines or forms (geometry) 5 be related to/ be associated with 6 aerial (adj): above ground; in the air

9 Paragraph 6, 7 and 8 7 enigma (n): a mystery, a puzzle 8 sign up (v): if you sign up for an organization or if an organization signs you up, you sign a contract officially agreeing to do a job or course of study 9 sensation (n): the general feeling or impression caused by a particular experience; something that causes great excitement or interest 10 witness, witnessing (v): to see, to observe an incident

(v) if you marvel at something, you express your great surprise, wonder, admiration; marvellous (adj, also spelled marvelous): if you describe something as marvellous, you are emphasizing that they are very good 12 defy (v): if something defies description or understanding, it is so strange, extreme, or surprising that it is almost impossible to understand or explain
