3 Vocabulary: Paragraph 1 1 schooling (n): schooling is education that children receive at school 2 compulsory (adj.): if something is compulsory, you must do it or accept it, because it is the law or because someone in a position of authority says you must 3 affluent (n): if you are affluent, you have a lot of money (the affluent are people who are affluent) 4 tutor (n): a. a tutor is a teacher at a British university or college; b. a tutor is someone who gives private lessons to one pupil or a very small group of pupils; c. if someone tutors a person or a subject, they teach that person or subject

4 Vocabulary: Paragraph 1 5 tutorial (n): in a university or college, a tutorial is a regular meeting between a tutor and one or several students, for discussion of a subject that is being studied 6 take place: something that happens 7 alternative (n, adj.): a. if one thing is an alternative to another, the first can be found, used, or done instead of the second; b. an alternative plan or offer is different from the one that you already have, and can done or used instead

5 Vocabulary: Paragraph 2 1 radical (adj.): very unusual, different from what is normal 2 apply to: if something, such as a law or rule, applies to a person or in a situation, it is relevant to the person or the situation 3 prohibit (v): if a law or someone in authority prohibits something, they forbid it or make it illegal

6 Vocabulary: Paragraph 3 1 at one time: if you say that something was the case at one time, you mean that it was the case during a particular period in the past 2 stigma (n): a. if something has a stigma attached to it, people consider it to be unacceptable or a disgrace; b. the stigma of a flower is the top of the centre part which takes in pollen (see photo) 3 take on: if you take on a job or responsibility, especially a difficult one, you accept it

8 Vocabulary: Paragraph 3 4 shortage (n): if there is a shortage of something, there is not enough of it 5 funding (n): funding is money which a government or organisation provides for a particular purpose 6 escalating (adj.): increasing; if a bad or unpleasant situation escalates or if someone or something escalates it, it becomes greater in size, seriousness, or intensity 7 motivate (v): to give a reason to do something (motivation: n)

9 Vocabulary: Paragraph 3 8 remove (someone or something) from (somewhere) 9 advocate (n): a person who believes in something and strongly supports and promotes it 10 secure (adj.): protected from danger or harm (security: n) 11 alongside (adv.): a. if something is alongside something else, it is next to it; b. if you work alongside other people, you work in the same place and co-operate with them; c. if one thing exists or develops alongside another, the two things exist or develop together at the same time

10 Vocabulary: Paragraph 3 12 conventional (adj.): a. someone who is conventional has behaviour or opinions that are ordinary and normal; b. a conventional method or product is one that is usually used or that has been in use for a long time; c. conventional weapons and wars do not involve unclear explosives 13 monitor (v): if you monitor something, you regularly check its development or progress, and sometimes comment on it

11 Vocabulary: Paragraph 3 14 setting (n): a particular setting is a particular place or type of surroundings where something is or takes place 15 pace (n): a. the pace of something is the speed at which it happens or is done; b. your pace is the speed at which you walk; c. a pace is the distance that you move when you take one step

12 Vocabulary: Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 1 critic (n): a. a critic is a person who writes reviews and expresses opinions about things such as books, films, music and art; b. someone who is a critic of a person or system disapproves of them and criticizes them publicly 2 miss out on: not to participate in something, not enjoy 3 interaction (n): communication with someone through conversation, looks, or action

13 Vocabulary: Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 4 peer (n): your peers are the people who are the same age as you or who have the same status as you 5 competent (adj.): having the ability to do something well, having good or excellent skills 6 disgruntled (adj.): discontented and dissatisfied 7 restore (v): to renew, to refresh 8 take part (in something): participate in

14 Vocabulary: Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 9 curriculum (n): a curriculum is all the different courses of study that are taught in a school, college or university (curriculum vitae=CV=resume) 10 extracurricular activity 11 compromise (n): a compromise is a situation which people accept something slightly different from what they really want (reach a compromise)

15 Vocabulary: Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 12 benefit of (something): the benefit of something is the help that you get from it or the advantage that results from it 13 access (n): a. if you have access to something such as information or equipment, you have the opportunity or right to see it or use it; b. if you have access to a building or other place, you are able or allowed to go into it

16 Vocabulary: Paragraph 4, 5 and 6 14 convention (n): a. a very large meeting, often of thousands of people who share the same interests or occupation; b. a way of behaving that is considered to be correct or polite by most people in a society; c. an official agreement between countries or groups of people 15 assert (v): a. if you assert your right to claim to something, you insist that you have the right to it; b. if you assert your authority, you make it clear by your behaviour that you have authority 16 the last resort: the only choice remaining because everything else has failed
