4 Mission The SHIP TA Center will serve as a central source of information for and about the SHIP program. The center will provide training, technical assistance, and promotional activities in support of the national SHIP program and its 54 individual SHIP projects. SHIP TA Center services will be available for optional – not mandatory – SHIP use; however, the center aims to serve every SHIP by providing timely, accessible, relevant, and accurate information. 4

6 Services coming by Spring 2015 Newsletter for SHIP personnel, called SHIP Watch A national SHIP website that will include a SHIP locator for the general public, a password-protected area for SHIP-only information, and a library of materials produced by and for SHIPs: www.shiptacenter.orgwww.shiptacenter.org Online SHIP Counselor Certification Tool o Stage One – bringing back the tool hosted by the previous SHIP Resource Center (a temporary solution) Regular SHIP Director Meetings 6

7 So What About SHIP talk? SHIP talk was created by the previous SHIP Resource Center and though it is still live, it is not maintained We will turn off this SHIP talk website after February 13 th o SHIP directors will be reminded via the SHIP Director Listserv o This will NOT interfere with SHIP access to the SHIP NPR system; SHIP NPR is a separate site, in spite of the similarity in URL names 7 When the new SHIP TA Center website is available later this spring, the old www.shiptalk.org address will automatically send visitors to the new SHIP TA Center website: www.shiptacenter.org www.shiptalk.orgwww.shiptacenter.org

11 Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) NEI3A has operated the national resource center for the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program since 2003 (www.smpresource.org).www.smpresource.org For the SHIPs, NEI3A will: 11 Coordinate overall SHIP TA Center services Host the national SHIP TA Center toll-free number: 877-839-2675 Coordinate and create content for the SHIP TA Center website when it is live (www.shiptacenter.org), including the online SHIP Locatorwww.shiptacenter.org Host regular SHIP director meetings

12 Medicare Rights Center The Medicare Rights Center has been helping people with Medicare understand and navigate the Medicare system since 1989 (www.medicarerights.org). They will:www.medicarerights.org Serve as Medicare subject matter experts for SHIPs Produce the SHIP TA Center’s online counselor training and certification tools Provide direct Medicare subject matter technical assistance to SHIPs via medicarehelp@shiptacenter.orgmedicarehelp@shiptacenter.org Provide Medicare Minutes at no cost to SHIPs Develop SHIP TA Center newsletters 12

13 Technical Frontiers, Inc. (TFI) TFI has extensive knowledge of the SHIP program through past and current contracts, most recently through hosting and supporting the SHIP NPR data reporting system. TFI’s role in the SHIP TA Center is to build and host the SHIP TA Center national website www.shiptacenter.org www.shiptacenter.org 13

14 Health Benefits ABCs (HBABCs) HBABCs has worked with many national entities including ACL, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the SMP National Resource Center on stakeholder engagement and program evaluation. HBABC’s role in the SHIP TA Center will be to: 14 Conduct the SHIP needs assessments Conduct the SHIP TA Center evaluation Convene SHIP peer networking groups, called “Communities of Practice.”

15 Mike Klug, consultant Provide SHIP program expertise Assist with website content development Support SHIP volunteer management, recruitment, and retention efforts. 15 After serving the SHIP program for years as part of the Health Assistance Partnership (HAP), Mike Klug has since been has providing Medicare subject matter expertise and assistance with SMP volunteer risk and program management initiatives. Mike’s role in the SHIP TA Center will be to:

16 Steve McCurley, consultant Steve McCurley is an internationally-known consultant, trainer, and author in the field of effective volunteer program management. Steve has been working with ACL and the SMP national resource center since 2010 to provide training, manuals, and other tools to support SMPs. Steve’s role in the SHIP TA Center will be to: 16 Provide volunteer management, recruitment, and retention training and subject matter expertise to SHIPs and the SHIP TA Center.

19 What is the Medicare Minute program? Began as a volunteer-based, peer-to-peer education program and now available to all SHIPs at no cost, thanks to grant funding through the SHIP TA Center. Medicare Minutes are short scripts, each on a specific Medicare topic, provided monthly SHIP volunteers or staff lead Medicare Rights- and ACL- vetted presentations each month on timely Medicare topics You do not need to be a Medicare expert to be a Medicare Minute volunteer! 19

20 Medicare Minute history Launched in New York in 2001, Medicare Minutes have since engaged many types of host organizations like SHIPs, AAAs, ADRCs, and SMPs Today reaches 100,000 audience members each year in many states— and growing! 20
