Antibiotics work either by killing harmful bacteria in the body or by preventing bacteria from reproducing. 14 Lesson 1 FDA Standards for New Medicines Medicine Safety In the United States, all medicines must meet standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before being approved and made available for sale. The FDA requires manufacturers to supply information about a medicine’s chemical composition, intended use, effects, and possible side effects. The FDA determines whether a medicine should be released to the public as a prescription or an over-the- counter (OTC) medicine.
