1 The Metric System SI – Systeme International d’Unites
Universal system of measurement. Based on units (or powers) of 10 or multiples of 10. Metric comes from the Greek metron, meaning measure. The world uses the metrics except US, Myanmar and Liberia

2 Length Volume mass Temp. Def. units tools

3 Essential Questions What are the tools scientists use to measure length, volume, density, and mass. What are the SI units for length, volume, density, and mass? How do we make conversions in the SI system?

4 Distance between two points Measured in meters
Length Distance between two points Measured in meters Use rulers, meter sticks to measure

5 Volume The amount of space an object takes up Liquids: liter L
Solids: cubic centimeters, cc, cm3 Liquids use a graduated cylinder Solids: ruler and calculator (l x w x h = V) Or displacement

6 Mass The amount of matter in an object Measure using grams g
Use a balance (not a scale!) to measure

7 temperature The kinetic energy(motion) of all particles in a substance Degrees C- Celcius, centigrade water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees Measured with a thermometer

8 density Density is a property of matter that tells how closely packed the particles are Density =mass (grams)/volume(mL) D=m/v

9 Length, Mass, & Volume (MGL)
Length is the distance between two points measured in meters. Mass is the amount of matter in an object measured in grams. Volume is the amount of space taken up by an object measured in liters.

10 The Tools Length – Meter stick or ruler Volume – Mass – Balance
Liquids: Graduated cylinder Solid: L x W x H or displacement Mass – Balance

11 METER Kilo Hecto Deka Deci Centi Milli k- h- dk- d- c- m- 100 10 .1
Prefix Kilo Hecto Deka Deci Centi Milli Abbreviation k- h- dk- d- c- m- Meaning 1,000 100 10 .1 .01 .001 METER More than one base unit Less than one base unit Count spaces to move decimal places. More than one meter move left, less than one meter move right.

12 Conversion 1,000 meters = 100 meters = 10 meters = 1 meter =
1 Kilometer 1 Hectometer 1 Dekameter 1 Meter 1 Decimeter 1 Centimeter 1 Millimeter

13 Convert the following:
cm = ______m m = ______hm mm = ______dm hm = ______m m = ______dkm 1 meter .4 hectometer 20 decimeters 500 meters 1 dekameter Kids Have Dropped Dead Converting Metrics (km) (hm) (dkm) (dm) (cm) (mm) METER

14 Metric Scavenger Hunt 1) The length of the dry erase board
2) The mass of the fossil 3) The volumes of the cups (big and small) 4) The length of this room 5) The mass of the chalk 6) The volume of the frog 7) The length of your finger 8) The mass of your shoe 9) The volume of your hand 10) Choice – choose what and how to measure something in the classroom
