Wood Frame Construction Common Components of a Traditional Wood Framed Building Gateway – Unit 7 – Green Architecture © 2012 Project Lead The Way, Inc.Green Architecture

Floor Joists Joists are horizontal structural members used to carry the floor and ceiling loads.

Subfloor The structural floor joined to the joists supports the finish flooring.

Sole Plate A horizontal structural member located at the bottom of the studs and used to hold the wall together. A sole plate also provides a surface for attaching the wall to its supporting structure.

Walls Stud: The vertical framing member in frame wall construction. The walls shown are made up of wood 2x4s spaced at 16 in. on center.

Top Plate A horizontal structural member located on top of the studs and used to hold the wall together.

Window Opening Header: A horizontal structural member used to support other structural members over openings, such as doors and windows. Sill: A horizontal wood member placed at the bottom of walls and openings in walls.

Window Opening Cripple Stud: A short piece of stud used to transfer a load from a top plate to a header or from a sill to a sole plate. Trimmer: Used to hold up a header, trimmers transfer the load of the header down to the sole plate.

Siding Material, such as boards or shingles, used for surfacing the outside walls of a frame building. Other examples include plywood, hardboard, plastic, vinyl, stucco, brick, or stone.

Roof Trusses Truss: An assembly of structural members joined to form a rigid framework, usually connected to form triangles.

Roof Trusses Ceiling Joist Rafters

Decking A covering placed over rafters that serves as a base below the roofing materials.

Underlayment Roof Felt: An asphalt- saturated paper used for water protection under roofing materials.

Shingles Thin material laid in overlapping rows to cover a roof Roof shingles can be made of Asphalt (saturated felt covered with mineral granules) Metal Plastic Wood Clay Slate
