3 Spanish adjectives In Spanish, adjectives must agree in… –Gender: Are we describing a masculine or feminine thing? –Number: Are we describing one thing or many things?

4 How to make adjectives agree Step 1: Figure out if you are describing a masculine or feminine noun –Masculine: typically will end in –o –Feminine: typically will end in -a

5 How to make adjectives agree Step 2: Figure out if you are describing one noun or many nouns –One noun: do nothing –Many nouns: add -s for a vowel, add -es for consonants

6 Examples If the adjective normally ends in an –o Masculine, singular: ends in –o Masculine, plural: ends in –os Feminine, singular: ends in –a Feminine, plural: ends in -as Example: Bonito Masculine, singular: bonitoMasculine, plural: bonitos Feminine, singular: bonitaFeminine, plural: bonitas

7 Examples If the adjective normally ends in a vowel other than –o –Both masculine and feminine use the same adjective –To make the adjective plural, add an “s”
