I. Germany’s Aggression A. Hitler violated the Treaty of Versailles by creating New Air Force (Luftwaffe) & expanding Germany’s army 1. The League of nations condemned these actions B. Hitler’s 1st aggressive move happened when he invaded the demilitarized zone in Germany called the Rhineland

II. Leagues Reaction A.Great Britain adopted the policy of appeasement and did not take military action against Germany 1.Appeasement : satisfying reasonable demands of dissatisfied power in an effort to maintain peace and stability

III. Italy’s Aggression A. In 1935 Mussolini invades Ethiopia and drops out of the league of nations

III. Alliances and Pacts A.In 1936 Hitler and Mussolini form a pact called the Rome-Berlin Axis, due to common political & economic interests B. Nov. 1936 Hitler forms an Anti-communist alliance with Japan known as Anti Communist pact

Germany continues aggression A.In 1938 Hitler Annex’s Austria, his homeland and makes it apart of Germany B.Later that same year, Hitler announced he would wage war if was not given the Sudetenland C.At the Munich Conference, The league of gave in once again to Hitler’s demands, and ignored Czech government 1. Neville Chamberlain hails it as Peace for our time

D. Germany doesn’t stop there, Hitler soon advances into Czechoslovakia & Demands Polish port of Dazig E. 1938, Sensing War was near and not wanting a two front fight, Hitler signs a Non- Aggression Pact with Stalin 1. This pact divides up Poland giving both a piece of the Country

V. World War II Begins A. In 1939 Germany invades Poland, causing Great Britain & France to declare war on Germany and starting World War II in Europe

VI. Japanese Path to War A.In 1931, Japanese soldier disguised as Chinese blow up railroad in the city of Mukden owned by Japan. They called it the Mukden Incident B.The Japanese used this as justification to invade and conquer Manchuria renaming it Manchukuo

C. China’s leader, Chiang Kai Shek, was already involved in a small civil war, against a Chinese Communist party, he didn’t want to go to war with China, eventually the Chinese put problems aside and focused on fighting Japan D. Japan was condemned for aggression and in 1933 with drew from the league of nations E. Japan continued to conquer, taking Mongolia and areas of North China around Beijing

F.Japan wanted to conquer and colonize other Asian nations, which they felt were inferior. They wanted to act as a model to them how to modernize G.Japans continued aggression trying to take the French Indochina H. this action caused the US to apply economic sanctions, they cut Japan off from US oil and steel. I.Japan launches attack on Peal Harbor, Bringing the US into the War creating World War II (Pacific Front)
