10 Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Sustained emotional disorder that comes from a traumatic and/or stressful experience Triggers or cues set off symptoms Nightmares/flashbacks Hyper alertness Memory and concentration problems Difficulty forming and maintaining relationships Issues with placing trust in people Feel alienated Feel personal responsibility/guilt for event Tendency to self-medicate 8/24/2019

11 PTSD Fixation on the past repeating itself causes a constant state of heightened awareness & stress This gets the victim stuck in a phase of the grieving process Usually try to avoid similar situations May bring on panic attacks or flashbacks Other symptoms include: Detachment Feelings of hopelessness & intense fear Hallucinations Avoidance behaviors (reclusiveness) 7.7 million Americans suffer from some sort of stress disorder 8/24/2019

Can be mild, moderate, or severe Situational or developmental stressors More recently depression has been linked to socioeconomic status Red flags for depression Depressed mood Less interest in hobbies & social activities Irritability or anger Diminished performance Substance abuse Social withdrawal or isolation Preoccupation with escape or death Sleep disturbances Loss of energy Poor concentration Increased aches & pains 8/24/2019

14 Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Anxiety)
A disproportionate amount of stress & anxiety about most day-to-day things Constantly jumping to the potential catastrophic situation Inability to control the physical reactions to stress Psychological treatment, medications, acupuncture—several treatment options are available High success rate! Diagnosed based on the following criteria: Excessive daily anxiety or worry for 6 months Difficulty controlling worry Three or more anxiety symptoms Impairment in daily life due to anxiety 6.8 million people! 8/24/2019

Signs & symptoms of anxiety Difficulty getting to sleep Shortness of breath Dizziness/lightheadedness Sweating Choking sensation Poor performance Detachment from reality Worry/nervousness Disrupted appetite Paresthesia Chills or hot flashes Gastritis, nausea Psychomotor agitation Irritability Fear of losing control Feelings of “going crazy” or fear of death 8/24/2019

17 Panic Attacks A triggered episode of acute cardiovascular & respiratory stress Similar to what will bring on a flashback Usually panic attacks come out of nowhere Even though the stress is likely built up over time Over the day, during the week, etc. Symptoms usually mimic an asthma attack Shortness of breath Chest pain Tightness in the throat Lightheadedness Without treatment this likely develops into panic disorder which may lead to agoraphobia or an unwillingness to go out into social situations High suicide rate 6 million people! 8/24/2019
