1 Common Core Standards:
RI , RI , W , W Friday, April 12th, 2019 Aim: How can viewing the murders of Mercutio and Tybalt build on our current understanding of the events within Romeo and Juliet? Objective: Students will be able recognize Act III, Scene I as the turning point of events of Shakespeare’s work. Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) Do you recall Mercutio’s words before his death. He cursed the families three times. Do you think this curse will play any role in the play or was it just him expressing his anger at the two sides? 2.) What would you have done in the situation if you were Romeo? Would you have fought Tybalt?

3 Mercutio versus Tybalt (1968)
This 10 minute clip is the portrayal of the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt from the 1968 movie version of the play. This one is clearly set in a location more similar to the play’s 14th century Italy. Shakespeare doesn’t include many stage directions and this leaves directors with some liberty in how they want to portray certain things. Let’s take a look at the way the fight is filmed in this movie. What is Tybalt’s reaction like upon realizing what he did? How does this compare to how we originally pictured in while we read?
