Objective: Students will be able to differentiate the major characters from the play and be able to track their development throughout the course of a play.
Do Now: Answer one of the following questions.
1.) How are relatable characters important to a work of literature? OR
2.) What is a diary/journal? Why do people keep them? Do you keep one? Explain why or why not

Aim: How can we differentiate important characters in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet?
Objective: Students will become familiar with the major characters from the play and analyze any development they have throughout the course of a play.
Agenda
1). Do Now: Answer one or both questions, turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will share with the class.
2). Lesson: Point of view and characters of Romeo and Juliet
3). Character Diary Assignment: Explain the assignment to students and answer any questions they may have regarding the character diary.
4). Reflection: What do you think will be easy about analyzing this character, and what do you think will be difficult?
What do you hope to gain from this project?

3. Point of View
First Person Point of View (POV): Presents the story from the perspective of a character in the story. First person can easily be identified through the use of I… We… Me… Our… My…
In a play, all dialogue is first person
Third Person POV: Tells the story through a narrator outside the story. Third person keywords: She… He… They… Romeo… The capulets…
All stage directions are third person
Why is POV important? Think of how Cinderella might be different if told by the stepmom or stepsisters.

4. Romeo and Juliet Character Diary
Choose a character based on today’s introductions
Follow that character throughout the play, try to get to know her/his personality, motivations, goals, fears, conflicts, etc.
After every act (there are 5), write a detailed diary entry from your CHARACTER’S point of view

Spends a lot of his time with friends
Falls in love with his enemy’s daughter

6. Juliet Daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet About 13 years old
Raised to be obedient and pure
Very loyal to her family

he is kind but possessive
Well-mannered

8. Tybalt Cousin to Juliet Hot-headed and quick tempered
Hates Montagues even more than most Capulets
Very protective of his family

9. Benvolio Cousin and close friend of Romeo’s
Usually attempts to do the right thing and keep the peace between the two feuding families
Helps cheer Romeo up when he is heartbroken

10. Mercutio Close friend of Romeo Quite witty and funny
Believes that Romeo is too obsessed with love and should trying spending more of his time having fun

11. Nurse Has raised Juliet since she was a baby
Very loyal to Juliet and usually tries to protect her and keep her happy
Not as wealthy as the other characters

12. Friar Laurence A cleric who has devoted his life to the church
Very kind hearted
Helps Romeo and Juliet
Trustworthy
Influences the actions of the play
