Tuesday, April 30th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RI RI , and SL Aim: How can we engage in a fishbowl discussion to analyze the universal messages in the end of Fences? Do Now: Read the poem “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes. Answer one of the following questions. 1.) How can you personally relate to the poem? 2.) How can a character in Fences relate to the poem? *Show any owed HW. Objective: Students will be able to engage in a fishbowl discussion to prepare to write a thematic essay on Fences.

Tuesday, April 30th, 2019 Aim: How can we engage in a fishbowl discussion to analyze the universal messages in the end of Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to engage in a fishbowl discussion which will prepare them to compose a thematic essay on Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. Poem interpretations will be shared. Figurative language (including imagery, simile and metaphor) will be analyzed. --Fishbowl Discussion: Students in the inner circle will engage in a discussion (based on the questions provided). The outside circle will listen carefully to the ideas presented, and they will evaluate the quality of the questions and answers. The inner circle students will speak one at a time, respect each other, listen when one student is speaking, and not interrupt the speakers. In order to earn credit, everyone must participate by either answering discussion questions in the inner circle (2x) or completing evaluations in the outer circle. C.) Q & A/Reflections: What were the successes in today’s fishbowl? What were the significant discussion questions analyzed and why? What were epiphanies from the discussion?

3 Comprehension Check: How well you understand the tasks today: Analysis of universal messages in Wilson’s play, Fences SELF-ASSESS: How easy/ difficult was that task?
