7 What was the Renaissance?
The Renaissance was a time of renewal. The word Renaissance means rebirth.

8 People had lost their faith in the church and began to put more focus on human beings.
Life became more secular, or not concerned with religion or the Catholic Church

9 One of the big changes in the Renaissance was in the way people thought about things.
In the Middle Ages people grew up thinking life was nothing but hard work and war. However, around the 1300s, the people in Florence, Italy began to think differently about life.

10 They studied the writings and works of the Greeks and the Romans and realized that earlier civilizations had lived differently. This new way of thinking was called Humanism, or a system of thought that rejects religious beliefs and centers on human values and their concerns. Now people thought that life could be enjoyable and they could have comforts. They started to think that people should be educated and that things like art, music, and science could make life better for everyone.

11 How did the Crusades contribute to the Renaissance?
Increased demand for Middle Eastern products Stimulated production of goods to trade in Middle Eastern markets Encouraged the use of credit and banking New accounting and bookkeeping practices (use of Arabic numerals) were introduced.
