Anal retentive: obsessive tidiness. Intolerance. Anal expulsive: sloppiness, defiance, excessive generosity. Phallic 3-5 Penis or clitoris Masturbation Boys and girls diverge. Oedipus complex/ electra complex. Men: anxiety about sex. Fear of castration. Women: feelings of inferiority and envy. Latent 5 to puberty Sexual drives are repressed Repression of previous stages. Acquiring skills and knowledge for adult life. No fixations Genital puberty-death The genitals masturbation & intercourse Sexual drives are re-awoken. Adult life is dedicated to the pursuit of sexual relationships. Fixation here shows a well adjusted adult.

Freud thought that a child went through certain stages of development all of which play an important part in the development of personality….. 1. Oral: Pleasure gained from sucking and biting etc

6 Psychosexual stages 2. Anal – pleasure gained from holding in and letting go……. 3. Phallic – pleasure gained from the genitals….

7 Psychosexual stages 3. Latency stage – nothing much going on here…..
4. Genital stage – The libido re-awakens (puberty…)

8 Personality …..In the middle of all this is Freud’s famous Oedipus Complex
