2 Gradual Process that becomes the Schism (Split in Church)
Religion begins to develop differently in the East from that in the West Due to Distance Lack of contact East is flourishing West is in decline Over the course of hundreds of years this will eventually lead to the Great Schism.

3 Differences that bring about the Schism
In the East Emperor is the head of the Church Appoints Patriarch(highest Church official) Greek is language of the Church Most important holiday is Easter In West Pope is the head of the church – kings answer to him. Latin is language of Church Most important holiday is Christmas

4 Fighting between the two sides
730 A.D. – Emperor Leo III bans the use of icons Argues that this is form of idol worship, which is not allowed. Byzantine Christians prayed to images of Christ, Virgin Mary and various saints. The Pope responds by excommunicating the Emperor Leaves lasting resentment between East and West

5 The Schism Schism = permanent split 1054 A.D.
Pope excommunicates Patriarch, Patriarch in turn excommunicates the Pope.

6 Eastern Orthodox Church
Roman Catholic Church Latin Pope head of Church Pope claims authority King and emperors Priests can’t marry No divorce Faith Based on gospel of Jesus & Bible Sacraments (Baptism) Priests & Bishops Greek Patriarch & other bishops run church together Emperor claims power over patriarch Priest may marry Divorce allowed in certain circumstances.

Struggles over succession Wars Enemies begin to advance Normans conquer Italy Seljuk Turks advance across Asia Minor The Crusades Emperor calls on Pope Urban II in 1090 for help against the advancing Turks Multiple Crusades: (HOLY WARS) Hold off the conquest of Constantinople for a few hundred years

9 Constantinople Falls to Ottomans
1453 – Ottoman forces surround Constantinople Takes two months but they succeed at capturing the Byzantine Capital Ottoman’s rename city Istanbul becomes capital of the Ottoman Empire

The Great Schism is the split of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches into two churches.
