In the East
Emperor is the head of the Church
Appoints Patriarch(highest Church official)
Greek is language of the Church
Most important holiday is Easter
In West
Pope is the head of the church – kings answer to him.
Latin is language of Church
Most important holiday is Christmas

4. Fighting between the two sides
730 A.D. – Emperor Leo III bans the use of icons
Argues that this is form of idol worship, which is not allowed.
Byzantine Christians prayed to images of Christ, Virgin Mary and various saints.
The Pope responds by excommunicating the Emperor
Leaves lasting resentment between East and West

5. The Schism Schism = permanent split 1054 A.D.
Pope excommunicates Patriarch, Patriarch in turn excommunicates the Pope.

9. Constantinople Falls to Ottomans
1453 – Ottoman forces surround Constantinople
Takes two months but they succeed at capturing the Byzantine Capital
Ottoman’s rename city Istanbul becomes capital of the Ottoman Empire
