Panama Canal America needs a canal cutting across Central America to reduce travel time for commercial and military ships 1903 America buys the rights to build a canal across Panama from France for $40 million However, Colombia (which controlled Panama) refused to grant permission A rebellion was organized and a dozen American warships were present as Panama declared independence America pays $10 million to Panama starting in 1913
