12 Role of Media in DRR in Pakistan
National Disaster Management Plan has included media as main stakeholder during NDMP Implementation. The following two interventions mainly focuses on Awareness campaigns:- Promotion of training, education and awareness in relation to disaster management Strengthen awareness Program on disaster risk reduction at local level

13 IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE MEDIA Coord.
Communication is an important part of both disaster prevention and management Communication can educate, warn, inform, and empower people to take practical steps to protect themselves from natural hazards. Effective communication bridges the gap between disaster managers/ officials and the community in all three phases i.e. before, during and after disasters Educating the public about disasters Gathering and transmitting information about affected areas;

14 IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE MEDIA Coord.
Alerting government officials, relief organizations, and the public to specific needs; and facilitating discussions about disaster preparedness and response Mass media highlighting about impending disasters leads to appropriate individual / community action Help implementing effective disaster prevention strategies Help providing timely relief Help coordinating rescue operations including evacuation of people to safe areas

15 IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE MEDIA Coord.
DM Organization should be source of usable and reliable information in a concise and readily understandable form for media men. Regular, routine interaction, before a disaster strikes, lays the groundwork for effective working relationships in the aftermath of a disaster. One vital factor in effective communications is the creation and repetition of precise, effective public service messages.

16 Role of Media in DRR Analysis of risk sources and patterns / factors increasing vulnerability of communities Public Information (potential dangers and risks) Early Warning dissemination Preparedness Information Advocate for risk reduction Encourage people’s participation
