2 Warm – Up / Journal Valerie feels a little angry and hurt when she sees her friend Sue. The last time Sue agreed to go to a movie with Valerie, Sue didn’t show up. Valerie was hurt that Sue didn't seem to care enough about their friendship to call and let her know she wasn’t coming. What are 3 positive ways Valerie could express her emotions? What are 3 negative ways Valerie could express her emotions?... Would these choices impact her physical health too? What is a possible strategy to help repair the friendship between Valerie and Sue?

3 Emotions Are signals that tell your mind an body how to react.
Have you saw a movie that made you feel happy, sad, scared, or even inspired?... Those feelings are examples of emotions!!!

4 Hormones Chemicals produced by your glands(your body) that regulate the activities of different body cells. Teens are extremely emotional because there physical development requires a large release of hormones.

5 Recognizing Emotions Happiness – usually feel energetic, creative, and sociable. Sadness – grief, lonely disappointed. Is a normal part of life. Love – strong affection, deep concern, and respect Fear – startled by someone or something Guilt – shame and regret that occurs when you act against your values. Anger – normal reaction to being emotionally hurt or physically harmed.

6 Another form of Anger is ….
Hostility – the intentional use of unfriendly or offensive behavior.

7 Dealing with emotions in a positive way
Empathy – the ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels, is expressed by supporting a friend who is going through a difficult time.

8 Hanging your emotions is not easy…
Some people choose to manage difficult emotions by avoiding them… these people use… Defense Mechanisms – mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful emotions and situations.

9 Common defense mechanisms
Regression – returning to behaviors of a younger age, rather then dealing with them in a mature manner. Denial – Don’t believe its true, but obvious to others. Projection – Blaming another person or group for your feelings. Rationalization – Making excuses to explain a situation or behavior, rather then taking responsibility for it. Compensation – Making up for weaknesses by gift giving, hard work, or extreme efforts.

10 Group Work Create 5 groups.
Each group must will be assigned a defense mechanism. Each group will create a poster of the mechanism and then choose one spokes person to explain. Each group will be responsible for teaching about a defense mechanism in front of the class. All work will be displayed on wall. PG. 81. Is a good reference.
