Today we are learning about the importance of Google Apps for Education as we prepare for college or a career after high school and how to access and collaborate using Google Drive and Google Docs. Success Criteria: I can explain the importance of a collaborative platform. I can access my Google account. I can access my Google Drive. I can create a new folder and upload file in Google Drive. I can create and share a new Google Doc.

with Friends Click on the desired file or folder (one time) to highlight it Click on the share icon Enter in the people you’d like to share with. Decide how what level access you would like to share. Can edit – recipients with this access can make changes to your file that all people with access will see Can comment – recipients with this access can view the file and make comments, but cannot change the document. Can view – recipients with this access can only view the file

12 Sharing Files vs. Sharing Folders
When you share a file, the recipient only has access to the file you shared. They will be able to view the changes to that file. When you share a folder the recipient has access to all files in that folder as well as any files you or they add in the future.

Go to your online drive – drive.google.com Click new, then Google Docs A new window will open up with a new Google Doc

Comparing and Contrasting Microsoft Word and Google Docs Microsoft Word Both Google Docs You have to manually save documents You cannot open a google doc in a Microsoft Word doc You cannot collaborate or comment on the same document while another person is using it You have to upload or save word documents to the drive in order to share them. You can type documents You can print documents Many of the tools are the same Docs are saved automatically to your drive You can open a Microsoft Word doc in a google doc You can collaborate or comment on the same document while another person is using it You can share google docs within the program

17 Collaboration Collaborate with 1 or more people by simply opening the same shared document. (The person you shared with must have “can edit” access) Students and teachers can use the “chat” button to have a conversation with the person you are collaborating with. (the chat button is located near the share button)

18 Adding Comments to Friends or Teachers
Highlight a word, phrase or sentence Right click on what you highlighted, chose comment Type your comment, then click “comment.”

19 Converting Google Docs to a Microsoft Document
Go to File on the menu bar. Go to Download as… Choose Microsoft Word.. 1. 2. 3.

20 Research Go to Tools Menu Open up Research Tab 1.

21 Research Click “everything” to do a general search
Click Scholar to locate published articles on the topic Clicking on the link will take you to the site in a new window. If you use something from that site, you can create a citation for it by hovering over the link in your docs window and click “cite.” This will automatically create a subscript number after the last word you wrote and a corresponding foot note with the actual citation.
