Were the Middle Ages in Europe more or less isolated than the Aztec Empire? Which civilization was more advanced? How did the Crusades impact Medieval Europe? Did The Crusades contribute to Medieval Europe becoming more advanced? How?

5 Seljuk Turks In 11th C. Turks invade (Muslims) and close Jerusalem to Jews and Christians Threatened Byzantine Empire with invasion as well Constantinople threatened as well

7 Byzantines Emperor wrote to the pope for military assistance in 1095
Pope urged Christians to fight! At the same time reports that the Turks were persecuting Christians in Palestine came to Europe People more willing to go fight because of these reports

8 Why were people willing to go fight?
Knights: a chance to use their skills Peasants: freedom from feudal bonds Everyone: promised immediate salvation in heaven if they were “killed freeing the Holy Land from non-Christians.”

9 The First Crusade About 30,000 crusaders left Europe between 1096 and 1099. June two month siege of Jerusalem The Crusaders took the city and killed many of its inhabitants

Reinforced authority of the church Strengthened self-confidence of Europe End of cultural isolation CULTURAL DIFFUSION Byzantines and Muslims= more advanced civilizations

12 Results of the Third Crusade
Richard was able to win several battles but signed a truce after three years of fighting Saladin refused to turn Jerusalem over to the Christians claiming that it was more important to Muslims than it was to Christians He did allow Christians to trade in the city

13 Effects of the Crusades
Feudalism died out and authority of kings increased CULTURAL DIFFUSION Byzantines and Muslims had a much more advanced civilization- arts, literature, medicine, science, etc. Increased trade! Learned to build better ships Brought the plague back to Europe with them…
