1 Expanding role of private sector in SHS
Pakistan SAARC Energy Webinar Nisar A Latif CEO - Solar Sigma Ltd. - Pakistan SSG International - Malaysia EO REAP

2 Table of Content Potential and Resources Energy Crisis in Pakistan
Opportunities in SHS Challenges Recomendations

3 Pakistan – Potentials & Resources
Pakistan Facts Sheet ( ) Total population : >190 Millions Electricity available to : 61% Population Natural Gas available to : 22% Population Petroleum Imports / year : >15 Million Tones Current max. Gen. Capacity : 22,000 MW Average available power : 10,000 to 18,000 MW Current Power demand : >20,000 MW Power demand growth rate : 9% per year Demand expected by 2030 : 130,000 MW Pakistan is an energy deficient country and eminent opportunities are available for local & foreign Technical and Investment Organizations.

4 Pakistan – Potentials & Resources
Solar Power Generation : >300 GW Projects Installed /in progress : >2000 MW Wind Power Generation capacity : >350 GW Projects Installed /in progress : >2000 MW Biomass, Waste & Geothermal capacity : 6,500 MW Projects Installed /in progress : >400 MW Hydro Power Generation capacity : 58,000 MW Major Govt. Hydro Projects Installed : >6,500 MW (Tarbela, Mangla, Ghazi Barotha etc.) Mini & Micro Hydro projects in Progress : >1000 MW

5 Energy crisis in Pakistan
Current momentary shortfall 5000 MW Expected 8% GDP target: 8000 MW/year 40% of population has no access to grid or suffers about 8-12 hours Power Outage 30 Billion PKR spent on UPS by 60% households

6 Opportunities in SHS 40% of population has no access to grid or suffers about 8-12 hours Power Outage CPEC related domestic energy demands New Housing Societies DG-Rooftop with Net-Metering Punjab KPUP Project 52,000 Schools

7 Challenges Lack of clear policy and objective goals for renewable energy Lack of awareness amongst customer and Installers. Customer doesn’t know what to seek for and Installers don’t know what to offer in terms of quality/ Technical requirements/ fiscal data Unavailability of any lean option for SHS . No quality control/quality assurance on imports resulting the low quality/sub standard products have bigger market share. Customer compares the prices with low quality PV products which are easily available in the market on cheap prices Unavailability of reasonably skilled workers/engineers of PV field

8 Recommendations Implementation of PV/Product standards for imports and installations Clear frameworks for Customers and Installers agreements Centralized Quality labeling Mass awareness campaign about the benefits of PV and Quality verification Recommendation: SBP Loan scheme for renewable Energy Projects to be implemented.

9 Let us invest in Renewable Energy before it’s too late
