2. Background Kenya’s population is approximately 38Million, Nairobi City’s population accounts for over 10% of Country’s population (about 3.2 million people); Nairobi is a capital of Kenya, financial & administrative hub of East Africa. The city contributes to about 60% of the Country’s GDP & provides for over 50% of formal employment in the country. Nairobi City is therefore a key focus area as an engine of growth in Kenya for sustainable development.

3. Energy supply National Energy production is approximately at 2,000MW Projected demand by 2030 to14,000MW Nairobi County consumes 50% of the national electricity & 60% of total LPG imported. Energy demand for Nairobi expected to increase to 6000MW by 2030. 3

Policy Framework National Energy Policy: – Sets out national policies & strategies for the sector. – Seeks to address various changes that have taken place in the sector - recent discovery of oil, natural gas & coal in the country -Address challenges facing the sector- climate change, low supply of reliable energy, high cost of energy Advocates for increased energy production from renewable energy and other local resources 4

5. Proposed Nairobi City County Energy Policy Starting point for the Nairobi County is on going preparation of the Integrated Urban Development Master Plan which recognizes the need for the county to formulate an energy policy to guide development of the sector. Being developed alongside the Integrated Urban Development Master plan with support from UN-Habitat Energy Policy expected to be completed this year Policy seeks to ensure affordable, sustainable & reliable supply of energy to meet the county’s development needs. 5

Cont’d… Nairobi City County potential resources to generate renewable energy within its jurisdiction and in surrounding counties: – Municipal solid waste: 70 MWe at Dandora dumpsite – Wind energy: Expansion of Ngong Hills from 5.3 to 25.5 MW – Small hydropower: Estimated 2 - 4 MW at Thika Dam – Geothermal energy: potential of over 15,000 Mwe – Solar energy: High potential 6

7. Hydropower Energy Hydro generation capacity 816 MW (46% of national installed capacity) Nearest hydropower station is only 83 km from Nairobi city (Sagana)

8. Geothermal Energy Accounts for 250.4 MWe (14% of national installed capacity) Main geothermal electricity generation sites only 100 km away from Nairobi City (Naivasha)

9. Wind Energy Current wind energy production capacity is 5.3 MW Capacity at Ngong Hills (about 30km from CBD) high potential can be increased to 25.5 MW

10. Solar Energy Significant but unexploited energy potential Limited use at household level UN Headquarters in Nairobi has installed 500 kW of solar PV to cater for electricity needs of the facility

11. Waste to Energy Main dump site has an estimated waste of 1.8 million cubic meters A 70 MWe power plant planned for construction Dump site to be rehabilitated
