1 Bell-ringer: 5 minutes p.s. DO NOT MOVE DESKS TODAY!

3 Reminders Detention warnings/ reminders
See me after school to retry missed quiz questions!! Missing owl pellet questions/ return work Practice worksheets to regain points on biology quizzes All makeup work due by Thursday 9 week test WEDNESDAY!

4 Frayer Model: Biome Fold paper hotdog style, crease, then unfold
Fold paper hamburger style, crease, then unfold

5 Station Work Bring at least 2 pieces of paper
Make the following chart: What makes it hard to live here? **Food, Water, Shelter, Space! The characteristics of the biome (at least 3-5 per biome) Biome Name Number down to 6

6 A biome is a major region that is characterized by its climate, soil type(s), and the dominant plants, animals, and other organisms that live there. A biome is made up of many individual ecosystems.

7 Types of Biomes Tundra Desert Grassland Coniferous forest
Temperate deciduous forest Tropical rainforest

8 Tundra

9 Tundra Arctic tundra can be found in Antarctica and the North Pole, North of the Arctic Circle. Small grass, lichen and herbs Cold Permafrost – layer of soil that is always frozen. Very short warm season that is very wet Many insects during warm season Some animals like reindeer and foxes move in during the growing season.

10 Coniferous Forest

11 Coniferous forest Confers = cone-bearing trees (pines, fir)
Is one of the most fragile biomes Found in Northern Hemisphere Growing season very short Nearly constant daylight in summer Many lakes and swamps Cold Spruce and Fir trees , Dense forests (tree tops block out a lot of sunlight) Grasses, small trees cannot grow – only some shrubs, ferns and mosses thrive. Animals such as squirrels, moose, birds, and insects live here

12 Temperate Deciduous Forest

13 Temperate Deciduous Forest
Climate and amount of sunlight can vary tremendously between each season. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in fall. Moderate temperature Maples and oaks – shed leaves in Fall. Receive a good supply of water. Dense forests Provides habitats for many animals.

14 Grassland

15 Grasslands Grasslands are characterized by their tall, perennial grasses and lack of trees (enough rain to support grasses but not trees.) 2 Types: 1. Tropical grasslands: between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, hot year-round, very dry, season of heavy rain. 2. Temperate grasslands: north of the Tropic of Cancer or south of the Tropic of Capricorn, cold winters and hot summers. Cover a quarter of the land on Earth Excellent for grazing animals. Soil is very rich. Wheat and corn grow here. Home for many small, burrowing animals

16 Desert

17 Desert Deserts take up 8.6 million square miles on Earth.
Driest places on earth, Get less than 25 cm of rain each year Often located on the dry side of mountain ranges Very hot during the day, cold at night. Soil is very dry and poor. Has little or no vegetation, Only a few kinds of plants grow in the desert. Very few animals can survive in the desert.

18

19 Tropical Rainforest

20 Tropical Rainforest Contain over half of the world's plant and
animal species live here. All fit into only 7 percent of the world's land. (more plant life and animal species than any other biome) Found in areas near the equator. Found in: Central Africa, Southeast Asia, Philippines, New Guinea, Central and South America. Very warm and very moist all the time. Receives plenty of sunlight and rain. Excellent for plant growth and soil development. Plants grow thick and tall.

21 Tropical Rainforest Layers:
Top – Emergent layer – tallest trees above rest of forest Next – Canopy – top of normal trees Lower canopy – epiphytes – plants that grow on tree trunks – not soil - because light is so far from ground. Understory – lowest level, much darker

22 Summary/HOT group discussion:
Which biome would be the most difficult to live in? Predict what animals could do to survive there and beat competition. Which biome could have the most resources?
