2 What is poetry? Poetry is a form of writing that uses not only words, but.. Form Imagery Patterns of Sound Figurative Language This form of writing is used to share feelings or a powerful message or theme.

3 Poetic Form Poems are divided into lines.
Lines are usually grouped into stanzas (paragraphs).

4 Imagery Poets use words that appeal to the reader’s senses-sight, sound, smell, touch and taste-to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. This is called imagery. Example: The trees rustled as the wind whistled gently through the leaves.

5 Patterns of Sounds Poets also use patterns of sound such as; alliteration, repetition, and rhyme to make poems pleasing to hear.

6 Alliteration Repeating the same beginning sound in more than two words. Example: Seven snakes slithered silently.

7 Repetition The repeating of certain sounds or words to create a certain effect. Example: Hickory, dickory, dock, The mouse ran up the clock The clock struck one, The mouse ran down, Hickory, dickory, dock.

8 Rhyme The repetition of same or similar sound usually in stressed syllables at the end of a line. Example: Hickory, dickory, dock, The mouse ran up the clock

9 Figurative Language Poets use figurative language to be descriptive. They do by using similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and personification.

10 Similes A comparison between two unlike things using “like”, “as” or “than”. Example: The water was as smooth as glass.

11 Metaphors Metaphors: A comparison between two unlike things without using “like”, “as” or “than”. Example: Laughter is music of the soul.

12 Hyperboles Hyperboles: An obvious exaggeration
Example: The books were stacked to the sky.

13 Personification Personification: Giving non-human objects human qualities Example: The t.v. talked all night.
