2 A DRUG is any chemical substance taken into the body – by mouth, inhaled or injected – that causes changes in the body and /or minds of the user. Drugs that are used properly to prevent, treat or cure illness are called MEDICINES.

3 Examples of misuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs include:
Use by the wrong person At the wrong time In the wrong amount For the wrong reason

4 DRUG ABUSE is the use of a drug for other than medical purposes, which results in the impaired physical, mental, emotional and/or social well-being of the user.

5 The effects that drugs can have on a person depend on:
Dose (amount taken) Time (how often it is taken) Other drugs present in one’s body Weight

6 TOLERANCE – occurs when the body builds up resistance to a drug
TOLERANCE – occurs when the body builds up resistance to a drug. The body needs LARGER amounts of the drug to get the same effect that was originally produced. ADDICTION - The body develops a resistance to a drug and requires the drug to function normally. They cannot stop themselves from using the drug(s). WITHDRAWAL -is a severe reaction (such as shakes, chills, cramps, nausea, rapid heart beat, and possible death) when a person stops using a drug they are addicted to.

7 Marijuana Stronger today than 10-20 years ago.
Active ingredient is called THC. 400 chemicals in a “joint” Most commonly used illegal drug in the US. Can build up a tolerance Gateway drug – more likely to try other drugs

Reduced concentration & Coordination Increased Heart Rate & Blood Pressure Panic attacks & Anxiety Short term memory loss Addiction Throat & Lung Cancer Weakened Immune System

9 Cocaine/Crack Cocaine - Most often inhaled, absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. Crack – Processed until it looks like little chucks of ice, usually smoked.

Elevated Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Breathing & Body Temperature Depression Addiction Heart Attack & Stroke Seizures Strokes & Heart Attacks Death Liver Damage Irritability Anxiety, Panic Attacks Sleeplessness Aggressive & Violent Behavior

11 Inhalants Common household products, not meant to be put in the body.
Can cause “Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome” - Person suffers heart failure and death within minutes of inhaling.

Nose Bleeds / Loss of Smell Slurred Speech Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome Irregular Heart Beat Heart Attack Nausea & Vomiting Liver & Kidney Damage Muscle Weakness & Cramping Abdominal Pain

13 Prescription Medication
Has become a serious problem. Dangers include: Overdose Nausea Organ Damage Heart Problems Intestinal Problems
