1 Importance of New Trading Routes
Silk Roads, Mediterranean Sea, Trans-Saharan and Indian Ocean Powerful new cities emerged. Novgorod, Timbuktu, Swahili city-states, Calicut, & Baghdad Growth of new goods & luxury goods was encouraged for trade. (Silk, cotton, textiles, porcelain, spices, gems, slaves, and exotic animals) New technologies for travel: (Caravan organization, Caravanserai, Camel Saddles)

Use of the compass, astrolabe and larger ship designs. New forms of credit and banking houses New foods were adopted in populated areas. Bananas in Africa & rice in East Asia. Spread of diseases such as Black Death followed paths of trade and military conquest.
