1 Five Themes Of Geography

2 Geography 5 LOCATION MOVEMENT REGION PLACE Human Environment
Interaction

3 (There are 2 different types of Location)
- Tells where a place is. (There are 2 different types of Location) ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION

4 - The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found.
ABSOLUTE LOCATION - The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found.

5 Latitude and Longitude lines tell ABSOLUTE LOCATION.

6 Longitude lines measure distance on Earth from east to west.

7 Prime Meridian: the starting point for measuring longitude
.Prime Meridian: the starting point for measuring longitude. It runs through England and has the value of 0 degrees longitude.

8 Latitude lines measure distance on Earth from north to south.

9 .Equator: a latitude line that is equally distant from the North Pole and the South Pole.

10 .The Equator divides Earth into a northern hemisphere and a southern hemisphere.

11 .The Prime Meridian divides Earth into an eastern hemisphere and a western hemisphere.

12 .hemisphere: Hemi = half Sphere = globe.

13 A street address is also an ABSOLUTE LOCATION.
Baines Middle School Sienna Ranch Road Missouri City, Texas

14 - The location of one place in relation to other places.
RELATIVE LOCATION - The location of one place in relation to other places.

15 When someone asks you where you live, you tell them you live “Near Houston” rather than saying, “in Missouri City.” Believe it or not, most people just don’t know where we are!

16 PLACE Shows something about a specific area (a landmark).
Man-made or nature-made.

17 Statue of Liberty When you think of the Statue of Liberty, what state do you think of?

18 Eiffel Tower When you think of the Eiffel Tower, what country do you think of?

19 Mt. Everest When you think of the Mt. Everest, where do you think of?

20 Mississippi River Delta
When you think of the Mississippi River Delta, where do you think of?

21 REGION - A group of places that have physical features or human characteristics in common.

22 The Rocky Mountains

23 The American Southwest

24 The Arctic

25 - The movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another.

26 Early humans chased herds of animals across continents.

27 In 1976, my family moved from Indiana to Texas.

28 Email, sending letters, and making phone calls are all forms of movement of ideas.
Writing Letters

29 Transportation Corridor
A path that makes movement easier.

30 Transportation Barrier
Something that gets in the way of movement and makes it more difficult

31 Migrate To move from one area in order to settle in another.
Sometimes people migrate. Why?

32 Push factors Problems that push people out of a country.
Examples: poverty, overcrowding, lack of jobs, prejudice, war, and political oppression

33 Pull factors Advantages in another place that pull people in.
Examples: a higher standard of living, employment and educational opportunities, rights, freedom, peace, and safety

34

35 HEI - Human-Environment Interaction occurs because humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the world around them.

36 DEPEND ON MODIFY (CHANGE) ADAPT TO air to breathe
flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, earth quakes litter and pollute sunlight for energy, and to help plants grow cut down forests for houses if it is cold we put on a sweater farming rain waters plants and gives us life plant trees and flowers if it is too warm, we wear shorts plants for food recycle trees = wood for building clean up beaches

37 In the case of hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and flooding, humans have to adapt to the changes in their environment.

38 Humans clear land for new homes and neighborhoods.

39 Farming is another example of how humans modify the world around them.

40 Five Themes Of Geography That's All Folks!

41 LOCATION - tells where a place is
(There are 2 different types of Location) (1) ABSOLUTE LOCATION - the EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found (2) RELATIVE LOCATION - the location of one place in relation to other places Examples: ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION Latitude and Longitude lines Mrs. Sekula’s class is next door to Mr. Yirgu’s class a street address MOVEMENT - the movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another MOVEMENT of PEOPLE In 1976, my family moved from Indiana to Texas. MOVEMENT of GOODS We rented a moving van to haul all our stuff across the country. MOVEMENT of IDEAS When we arrived at our new home, we called our family and told them we had arrived safely.

42 HEI - Human-Environment Interaction – occurs because humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the world around them DEPEND ON ADAPT TO MODIFY (CHANGE) air to breathe flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, earth quakes litter and pollute sunlight for energy, and to help plants grow cut down forests for houses if it is cold we put on a sweater farming rain waters plants and gives us life plant trees and flowers if it is too warm, we wear shorts recycle plants for food clean up beaches trees = wood for building The Rocky Mountains REGION – a group of places that have physical features or human characteristics in common The American Southwest The Great Lakes The Arctic PLACE – shows something about a specific area (a landmark) – man-made or nature-made Statue of Liberty Eiffel Tower Mississippi River Delta Mt.
