1 Q buzzword masthead cover lines cover lines date and price
It says ‘free’ bigger than the rest of the writing which will draw attention to anyone looking at the magazine because they will think that they are getting something if they buy the magazine. As well as this, exclusive is a buzz word too because people will read it and think that they need to buy this magazine because it's 'exclusive' and therefore won't be able to find anything like it again. It's like the writer is giving something specifically to the reader and this will make the audience more likely to buy the magazine since they don't want to ,miss out and feel like it's more personal, and people of this age don't want to miss out on any chance of getting something for free (of any age really). The colour scheme is red. This is effective because it’s eye catching to the target audience and it looks simple which is good because it’s appealing to the eyes but it also looks exciting because it’s red which is quite bright which shows the target audience that they won’t be bored when reading the magazine. The name ‘Q’ is short and simple. This is effective because it dawers in the target audience since they don't get bored while they are reading it- it's straight to the point and they like things to be simple since they are getting older and finding things harder to understand. As well as this, it makes the magazine seem neater because it's not completely covered up with a massive title and this will be satisfying to the target audience because they like things to be organised in their life and therefore they can relate with the cover. cover lines cover lines date and price They are spread out really neatly and this, again, will satisfy the reader and also they blend in with the colour scheme which add to the tidy element of the cover. The date and price are quite small because it means it doesn't ruin the look of the cover. This will be important to the target audience because, generally, they value things like the date of a magazine which is important to them. main cover line It says ‘foo fighters’ in really big writing which will draw in the target audience because Foo Fighters are a really famous band who they will most likely know or like, and when they see that it’s a magazine about this band(which they will be able to see straight away) then they are likely to show interest in the magazine. Also, because 'Foo' is in capitals and 'fighters' isn't, it makes it seem more dramatic and almost as if the writer is shouting at you to get you excited about Foo Fighters and wake you up by making you jump (because as people get older they lose energy) and it's like the writer knew this and directed this at them. barcode strap line ‘Dave Grohl saves rock. Again’ will interest the target audience because it sounds exciting since someone is saving something, they will want to know what he did to save something as big as rock and therefore buy the magazine. Also, because ‘again’ is written as a separate sentence it makes it more dramatic and exciting for people who are reading it. Furthermore, the target audience know who Dave Grohl is because they are of the right age to be his biggest fans, so seeing his name written down will excite them since they know him.

2 Target Audience The target audience are adults aged I know this because the cover is of Dave Grohl who is popular among people this age and a lot of Foo Fighters more dedicated fans have been around from the beginning and so are this age now and this magazine would appeal to them because they would want to read it to find out about Foo Fighters (especially if they don’t have any form of social media). Also another way I know this is because in the cover lines it’s talking about Arctic Monkeys which people would also be interested in, and Nicki Minaj even though people of this age may not have heard of her, if they read about her in a magazine they would find it interesting. As well as this, the colour scheme would be appealing to people this age because it’s exciting with the splash of orange in the middle which would make them want to buy it because some people may miss the excitement they used to have in their lives and use this as an attempt to get it back, but also the red and gold around the edge are sophisticated and tidy looking which may bring satisfaction to this target audience. The target audience are a niche audience because they would be dedicated to foo fighters and aren’t likely to consume mainstream or popular texts such as soaps, sitcoms or reality TV, typically speaking. Q is a magazine which covers music that is aimed at 40 year olds and most 40 year olds aren’t mainstream in this sense. Their social grade would probably be C1 because they have a fair bit of money however they aren’t very upper class because they listen to rock music and upper class people generally stress that they don’t listen to rock. Furthermore, the target audience would be Reformers because they have freedom of restrictions and people who read ‘Q’ aren’t restricted by fashion and things like this, they are free to like what they like. They are also Explorers because they seek discovery and on the front cover of this particular magazine cover, Nicki Minaj is mentioned in a cover line and the target audience who like Foo Fighters most likely haven’t listened to her music since it’s a completely different genre but they might appreciate the fact that she’s been mentioned and try listening to her music because they like to try new things (even if they aren’t students). They could also be Strugglers in some ways, not that they are D or E demographics but their brand choice would involve visual impact and physical sensation but they don’t just live for the day because they have to work so they have to plan ahead. Finally, they are also Resigned because they seek survival since they are older and they have to worry more about actually surviving, they are interested in the past (they are Foo Fighters fans which means they may have liked Nirvana and be interested in that side of the past) and also their brand choice stresses safety, familiarity and economy which is typical of the 40 year old group. You can apply LifeMatrix Segments to the target audience. They are 'priority parents' because they have family values/ activities. They are also heading into the 'free birds' category because they are going to be active altruistic seniors.
