3 Executive Power - Who (individual or group) has the power to enforce laws?

4 Monarchy – Absolute Nations with absolute monarchs:
From Greek – Monos (one), Archy (rule) Monarchy – Rule by a family (King, Queen, Sultan, Prince, Emir) Absolute Monarchy Ruler is not bound by law Nations with absolute monarchs: Brunei, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Swaziland

5 Monarchy – Constitutional
A Government in which the Monarch is not above the law The rights of these monarchs vary with each nation King of Morocco has significant powers Queen of England has very limited powers Some nations with Constitutional Monarchs (Sweden, Spain, Lesotho, Japan)

6 Autocracy – rule by one Unlimited Power
Dictatorship – Stalin, Mussolini, Gaddafi, Castro Military or Civilian Absolute monarchy North Korea – SPA (Supreme People’s Assembly – only political party)

7 Legislative Power The Power to Make, alter or repeal laws

8 Democratic Forms of Government
From the Greek Demos (common people) and Kratos (force, power, strength) Originated in Athens .

9 Pure/Direct Democracy
Majority rules town council meeting, student council

10 Representative Democracy
People Vote on Representatives to run the government

11 Parliamentary Democracy
Presidential Democracy – The people vote separately for the leaders of the executive branch (President/VP) and their Representatives in congress. United States Parliamentary democracy – the people vote for their representatives in the Legislative Branch and then the Legislative Branch votes for the leader of the Executive Branch Great Britain

12 Republic Rule by the people Leader does not inherit their position
No Majority rule – rights of the individual are respected

A government ruled by or subject to religious authority Iran Vatican City
