7. Literacy
In Literacy class, students will develop skills and utilize strategies in order to become well-rounded readers, writers, speakers, listeners and thinkers.
The students will work on a combination of vocabulary, grammar, writing, and reading (novels, poetry, short stories).

8. Each day, students are expected to have a silent reading book (SRB) for reading time during class. Not having a silent reading book will count as being unprepared for class.

9. Homework
Assignments are written on the homework board every Friday for the whole next week and recorded on the website.
Absent Policy: When you are absent, it is YOUR job to find out what you missed and complete it. The website has every PowerPoint/document you are given in class!

10. Homework cnt’d
All assignments must be completed on time. Homework assignments handed in one day late will earn half credit.
Any assignments more than one day late will not receive credit and will earn a zero. Long-term projects will receive point deductions for each day they are late.

11. Detention Policy
- Detention can be assigned either for disciplinary reasons or for breaking procedural rules (being unprepared for class, coming to class late, etc.)
- When a student is assigned a detention, he/she will be given a slip indicating the nature of the offense, as well as the date and time of the detention. 
- The student must bring in their slip, signed by a parent, to the detention.  Failure to do so will result in five minutes added to the detention for each day that the student does not bring in the signed slip as it is the student’s responsibility to get the slip signed. 
- Detentions take place after school. Parents will be given at least 24 hours’ notice of an upcoming detention.

12. Independent 8th Graders!
At this age, we expect you to be independent and to be able to self-advocate!

14. Caught ‘Ya
Students should be rewarded for their good actions and behavior!
On my desk, you will see a fishbowl with the phrase “Caught ‘Ya Being Good” on it. Every time I “catch you being good”, I will present you with a small sheet of paper on which you will write your name., and you will put it in the fishbowl.
You can receive name sheets to put into the fishbowl for any of the following:
Helping a friend with schoolwork
Going out of your way to be kind to someone else
Assisting a friend in catching up when he/she has been absent
Running an errand for a teacher
A noted improvement in grade
And many more!

15. Caught ‘Ya
You may inform me about another person’s kind actions for entry into the fishbowl, but you may not inform me about your own actions (i.e. - the point is do nice things and work hard because you want to, not just for entry into the fishbowl).
Each month I will be picking three names out of the fishbowl per class. The first two names I pick will be able to a pencil or eraser out of the birthday box. The third person will receive the grand prize: any item of your choosing from my prize box! Names will be picked out on the last day of every month.
