1 How do these religions compare?
Hinduism and Buddhism How do these religions compare?

2 Do Now: To what extent did the religious beliefs change in India over time? Why is that the case?

3 Hinduism vs. Buddhism Hinduism Buddhism
Monotheistic religion (not Polytheistic) - Brahman represents everything in the universe Atman: a person’s soul/life giving force Moksha: release from the cycle of rebirth Reincarnation: the rebirth of the soul in another bodily form Karma: the force created by a person's good and bad actions Buddhism Non-theistic religion as statues of the Buddha are respected but one supreme god is not worshipped Believes that the three main marks of existences are pain, impermanence and egolessness. Believes in karma: right actions/thinking Believes in nirvana: cessation from the ignorance and pursuit of survival

4 Origins of the Faith Hinduism
Originated from the Vedas and other religious writings. Traditions also come from epics - long poems that tell the adventures of heroes. Mahabharata - tells a great war where gods and people fought side by side to control a kingdom Ramayana --tells the story of the ideal Hindu couple - Prince Rama and Princess Sita Buddhism Buddha or 'awakened one' BCE Originated from the story of the Buddha who achieved enlightenment years ago when he was 35. Traditions are based on Buddhavacana (word of the Buddha) and Sutras (Buddhist scriptures).

5 Buddhists and Hindus :Dharma and Karma
Dharma outlines the behaviors that are considered to be in harmony will the rta, the order that makes life and universe possible Dharma includes duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and ''right way of living''. Essentially, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities based on your caste! Karma literally means "deed" or "act", where certain actions create reactions ( positive or negative based on the original action!) Karma is not fate because it is based on free will where we create our own destinies.

6 How to achieve salvation?
The goal in Hinduism is to achieve salvation through moksha by practicing proper dharma and karma! The goal in Buddhism is to achieve enlightenment (nirvana) through the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path!

7 Buddhism: The Four Noble Truths
The Four Noble Truths are the heart of Buddhism: All life is full of suffering, pain and sorrow The cause of suffering is the desire for things that are really illusions, such as riches, power and long life The only cure for suffering is to overcome desire The way to overcome desire is to follow the Eightfold Path
