1 READINGS FOR FORMATIVE #6 9 th Grade MYPWednesday, November 18, 2015

2 Grammar Snippet: 11/18/15 Quotation Marks and Parentheses As we learned before, quotation marks go around what a person directly says. They also go around the exact words a writer uses. – Shakespeare wrote, “Juliet is the sun.” Use parentheses [ ( ) ] to include material that you want to de- emphasize or that wouldn't normally fit into the flow of your text but you want to include nonetheless. We use these to cite the source of a quotation, which is important to include, even if it doesn’t flow with the sentence. – Romeo said, “Juliet is the sun” (Shakespeare 2.2.3).

3 Grammar Snippet: 11/18/15 Quotation Marks and Parentheses Directions: Rewrite the following quotations, correctly using quotation marks and parentheses. Act 2, scene 2, line 26, Romeo says, O, speak again, bright angel. Hamlet asks, To be or not to be? That is the question– in act 3, scene 1, line 57. The townspeople say Richard Cory was “rich – yes, richer than a king in line 9 of Robinson’s poem.
