Bracketed Annotations Discussion of Text

6 Notes: Introducing Quoted Evidence
Tag Lines: Begin a quotation from the text with an introductory or transitional phrase. According to Shakespeare, “…. Initially, Romeo says “…. Another example is when “…. Or just incorporate the quotation into the sentence. Romeo loves Juliet because she is “a winged messenger of heaven” (Shakespeare ).

7 Notes: Quoting Evidence (Punctuation)
Quotation Marks: When you rewrite what the author wrote word-for-word, all of that textual evidence must go in quotation marks. Example: In Donald Justice’s poem, Incident in a Rose Garden, Death tells the master, “I only meant to ask him/To show me to his master” (Justice 47-48). Example: In Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet, Romeo loves Juliet because she is “a winged messenger of heaven” (Shakespeare ). Periods: If the quotation ends with a period, move the period outside of the quotations AND put it AFTER the citation. If the quotation ends with a question mark or exclamation point, then put it in the quotation marks. In addition, put a period after the citation in parentheses.

8 Notes: Citing Evidence
All citations go in parentheses after the quotation but before the period. Citation for a Poem: (author’s last name line number) (Frost 13) Citation for a Story: (author’s last name page number) (Angelou 3) Citation for a Shakespeare Play: (author’s last name act#.scene#.line#’s) (Shakespeare )

9 Scoring of Formative #2 = 9 Points
Completion of assignment: claim and evidence = 5 points REMEMBER Evidence #1 and #2 Quoting the evidence Paraphrasing or summarizing does not count. There should be a tag line. Citing the evidence Citation is in parentheses after the quotation and before the period. Citation is in the correct format for the type of text. Explanation of Evidence = 4 points Explaining the meaning of the quotation= 1 point for each piece of evidence Typing the quote back to the claim = 1 point for each piece of evidence

10 Notes: Example of Formative #2: Explaining Evidence
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is truly in love with Juliet because he admires her and he uses romantic language to express his feelings. Romeo loves Juliet because she is “a winged messenger of heaven” (Shakespeare ). According to this quotation, he admires her because he uses a metaphor that shows how she is like an angel. This shows that he truly loves her because he sees her perfections when he looks at her. Also, while observing Juliet, Romeo says, “Juliet is the sun” (Shakespeare 2.2.3). In this metaphor, he is saying that Juliet is the center of his universe because she is the sun around which he revolves. His comparison illustrates the depths of his love for her. In both examples, rather than stating his feelings directly, Romeo uses romantic, metaphorical language to describe how passionately he loves Juliet.

11 Notes: Example of Formative #2: Explaining Evidence

12 Requirements for a Claim
Title and author are stated at the beginning. The title of a Shakespeare play is underlined. Refer to the author by his/her last name. It is about a specific idea. Ex: a particular character Ex: a certain conflict in the story Ex: a specific theme in the story It is debatable, and you take a clear position. This means there is no “correct” answer. You have to take one side or the other, not both. Includes 2 valid reasons to support the claim.

13 Let’s Get Started! Step-By-Step Guided Writing Formative #2!

14 Write Your Claim Write a claim based upon the prompt on your worksheet. Based upon Benvolio’s speech, who do you believe is to blame for Mercutio’s death? Romeo, Tybalt or Mercutio himself? Explain. When you are finished, I will come around to check the claim.

15 Requirements for Quoting and Citing Evidence
Each quotation starts with a tagline, which is an introductory phrase the introduces or gives context for the quotation. Each quotation is written word-for-word how the author wrote it. There are quotation marks around the quotation. The period is after the citation. The citation includes the author’s last name and the act.scene.line(s) in parentheses.

16 Examples of Quoted, Cited Evidence
Romeo loves Juliet because she is “a winged messenger of heaven” (Shakespeare ). Tagline: Romeo loves Juliet because she is Quotation: “a winged messenger of heaven” Citation: Author’s last name: Shakespeare Location: Act 2, Scene 2, Line 30 While observing Juliet, Romeo says, “Juliet is the sun” (Shakespeare 2.2.3).

17 Quote and Cite Your Evidence
Based on the claim you wrote, on your worksheet… Choose your first piece of quoted evidence. Write it after your claim and be sure to include: the tagline the quotation the citation When you are finished, I will come around to check the piece of evidence.

18 Requirements for Explaining Evidence
Explain the meaning of the quotation. What is the character saying? What is the context of the quotation? How does the quotation develop character, conflict, or theme? Tie the quotation back to the claim. How is it relevant? How does it support your claim? Use the wording from your claim to make your explanation clear.

19 Notes: Example of Explaining Evidence

20 Explaining Your Evidence
Now, write a 1-2 sentence explanation of your first piece of evidence. Be sure to include: the meaning of the quotation how the quotation supports the claim Grading: 5 points completion 2 points for each explanation: 1 point for explaining the meaning of the quotation 1 point for tying the quotation back to the claim

21 Finishing Your Paragraph
Now, finish your paragraph. Choose your second piece of quoted evidence. Write it after the first evidence/explanation, and be sure to include: the tagline the quotation the citation Write a 1-2 sentence explanation of your second piece of evidence, and be sure to include: the meaning of the quotation how the quotation supports the claim Write a conclusion sentence.
