Theme Paragraph Recap

What went well Sentence structure is improving! Most of you began with a topic sentence that stated the theme. Most of you used quotes from the poem. Most of you used a concluding sentence.

Things to improve Yikes! What happened to those transitions and sentence starters? Some of you wrote a paragraph without actually speaking about the poem. This is literary analysis... We analyze literature, not just giving our own thoughts. Explanation sentences... Some of you left these off! WHAT!!! EXPLAIN how it fits the theme. Do not just restate it again.

Check out this AMAZING paragraph – Good job, Berry! The theme of this poem is, “all people are connected one with another.” The first place this can be seen is when the author says, “But it will be/a part of you, instructor./ You are white--/ yet a part of me, as I am a part of you./ That’s American”(29-35). This is important because no matter the race of people, they are connected to each other some how. A second place this can be seen is when the author says, “As I learn from you, you learn from me” (37-38). This is important because even though one is the teacher and one is the student, they still earn from one another and are connected through the learning. These two reasons prove that all people are connected one with another.

Oops, we need to review those new skills... ICE quotes – stands for Introduce Cite Explain Introduce: Use the transition or sentence starter to let the reader know you are going ot give an example. Cite: Use quotation marks, EXACT WORDS, and line or page number. Explain: Explain how it fits the topic sentence.

Check out the correct punctuation and formatting This theme is seen when the author says, “and maggie discovered a shell that sang/so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles” (l.3-4). This shows that the ocean is important because it helps people forget the cares of the world and just get lost in nature.

Open your books to page 587 and read “The Runaway.” Which of the following is the BEST theme for this poem? A.Horses are amazing animals and humans are lucky to have them around. B.New experiences can be scary. C.Snowstorms are scary. D.Youngsters need adults to guide them through new experiences. PROVE YOUR CHOICE BY WRITING A WELL-STRUCTURED PARAGRAPH. USE AT LEAST 2 ICE QUOTES THAT ARE PUNCTUATED COREECTLY. USE THE PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE WE HAVE STUDIED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
