3 Attendance and Tardiness O You are expected to be present in school each day. O If something arises, it is your responsibility to make up work that is missed. All work from previous school days is in the blue bin near the door. O If you know you will be absent, please check ahead of time for the missing work.

4 Classroom Participation O Be on time and prepared for class O Use your time wisely O Be actively involved at all times O Have a positive attitude O Do not disrupt other learners O Respect the quiet signal (dimmed lights) O Keep your hands, feet, and inappropriate comments to yourself.

O Suggestions: talents, a place where you were born, a type of pet you have, a place where you have lived or visited, another language that you speak, a special event in your life, something that has happened to you.

12 Why is it important to establish goals? Our first unit this year invites us to think about the way people grow through the goals they set and the difficulties they encounter. Read the three quotes and choose the quote you like best.

20 Reading Poetry O We are going to read a poem that relates to friendship. O How do you read a poem?

21 Reading Strategies: Poetry O Read the poem aloud: pause at the end of thoughts and not always the end of the line, listen for rhyme and rhythm. O Visualize the images created O Try to figure out the theme (what the author is saying) O Let your understanding grow. Allow yourself to see something new each time you read the poem.

22 Be an active reader! O Circle words that are new to you. O Underline key words and phrases. O Note word patterns and repetition. O Write down your questions, reaction, and ideas about the work in the margin.

24 Thinking about Text How does the message or theme of this poem connect to the idea of friendship? Think about it silently. Share with your partner. Share with the class.

25 Poem Reflection After you’ve shared some thoughts with others and heard others from the class, write your own reflection on the back of your poem. What does this poem mean to you? Can you give any life examples of how it relates?

27 TGIF! (Thank Goodness It’s Friday!) O It’s time to make your own friendship quote. In your journal, date your first entry and answer the following quotation: O “A good friend is someone who…” O Also, get out your Letter to Miss Tysko and signed syllabus.

28 O Our class is more than just reading and writing. It will focus on all types of media and analysis. Watch the following story and answer the following answers in your journal: What does this story mean to you? Can you give any life examples of how it relates?
