The number of school days missed each year in the United States due to the flu: 38 million The amount that is spent on medical costs and lost work each year in the United States because of food borne illnesses: $5 - $6 Billion The amount the United States spends each year to treat infectious disease: $120 Billion

4 Objectives 1. State why diseases affect everybody 2. Identify 2 bacterial diseases 3. Identify 2 viral diseases 4. List examples of fungal, protozoan, and parasitic infections 5. Name 2 organizations in your community that help prevent and treat the spread of infectious disease

5 Diseases Affect Everybody ! ! There are so many pathogens in so many places that it is impossible to avoid all of them. Most susceptible Young Elderly

6 What is our best defense…? To avoid behaviors that increase our chances of becoming infected. Remember…Prevention… before….Treatment

18 Protozoan Infections Protozoa are most often found in water and soil. About 20,000 kinds of Protozoa exist, but only a small number of them cause disease.

19 Protozoan Infections Malaria: most widespread and serious Symptoms: fever, chills, headache, fatigue Transmission: mosquitoes Several millions people infected each year Apporx. One million die each year Amebic Dysentery: an inflammation of the intestine caused by an ameba. Symptoms: nausea, diarrhea, fever
