2 Some facts & figures 11% of the UK workforce has literacy problems and 40% numeracy 27% of council staff have no or below level 2 qualifications Local government has a target to meet of 50,000 new apprentices by 2011 Over 31% of council staff will reach retirement age in the next decade

8 Real People – A Real Difference WorkStart to an Apprenticeship - Leanne A young single parent who left school with no qualifications. After a Workstart programme, secured a place on our apprenticeship scheme. Her tutor says that Leanne is the best student she has ever had. “Take the opportunity if you get the chance. Don't be scared to try something new. You never know where it could take you.”

9 Real People – A Real Difference Apprenticeship to Level 4 - Mercia Didn’t want go to university because of the cost. Became an apprenticeship and now has a permanent post as a project management support officer. At Uni part-time doing a BA Hons in event management with funding via Lancashire Student Services. “Completing my Apprenticeship has given me a better understanding of the type of career I want pursue and the type of qualifications I need in order to do so. By having the opportunity to do a part time degree that is funded and being able to work at the same time has given me the best of both worlds”

10 Real People – A Real Difference Basic Skills to Management – Janice As a general assistant on ¾ hour per day washing up, when her son went to school, Janice increased her hours to 2 per day and was offered the opportunity to do an NVQ level 1. From these small beginnings Janice has progressed to being an Operations Manager for the school meals service, managing 45 school kitchens and a staff of approx 110. “I have grown in confidence, and I’m a changed person”
