8 AMERICAN POLITICAL PARTIES Historically, the US has always been a two-party system Washington warned against forming political parties; need to unite as a nation First political parties: Democratic-Republicans, split in 1828 Federalist, died out around 1815 Today’s political parties formed: Democrats, 1832 Republicans, 1856

9 Democrat Government should be involved but in social problems only Liberal: favorable to progress or reform change is good Began with Andrew Jackson, who was commonly called a “jackass”

Single-issue: promote social, economic, or moral issue Ideological: support a particular philosophy Independent Candidate: form around a leader with strong personality

14 POLITICAL CORRUPTION political machine – so powerful candidates sweep elections year after year patronage – get political office in exchange for support Most famous was NYC’s Tammany Hall “Boss” Tweed and friends grew rich from bribes and kickbacks Few social service agencies existed to help poor and immigrants Often served a useful purpose providing for the needy, just give me your vote
